Paradise Island Bahamas
Question:
Nope, when the cup is placed over the ear, it traps the heat and keeps it from escaping. The only place the warm air has to go is in your ear. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping. Smart is Beautiful

the towel keeps you from splashing your ear with hot water but the steam goes right thru.

Flying back on Delta Airlines, my ears closed up on me. My question to you frequent flyers, what can i do so that my ears don’t close up on me the next time i fly.
First, if you are at all congested, make sure you take a good decongestant that takes effect at least one hour BEFORE you fly (so take it TWO hours before you fly). If it is not a 12-hour decongestant, make sure to take it again at the correct interval so the drug is in your system the entire time of your flights. Second, as Ellen mentioned, swallowing helps. So does moving your jaw (chew gum if you can stand it). Yawning also helps. Try the valsalva (sp?) method. Pinch your nose closed, and try to "blow your nose". This will clear your eustachian tubes. –Helen

There is also an ear plug designed to slow the impact of pressure changes. It’s called ear planes and can be found at travel shops & drug stores. My spouse uses them. Personally, my ear canals, like the rest of me, are large & chunky so I am fortunate about that. the "blowing" method doesn’t always work..
You need to "blow" as soon as you start to hear the engines rev down and descent start, and blow regularly throughout the descent. If the pressure differential is too great, it squeezes your tubes and you can’t blow anymore. But if you equalise at regular intervals, then you prevent the pressure differetial from being too big to be fixed. if you have problems like I do.. I find the decongestant helps..
Careful with decongestants. They tend to dry your nose. On long flights, you can get nosebleeds. Also, the more you practice the "blowing", the easier it gets. You can practice on the ground when your nose is clear.

the "blowing" method doesn’t always work.. if you have problems like I do.. I find the decongestant helps.. I usually take some form of tablet for sinusitis and last time I flew into Hongkong I used a nasal spray as well.. ( this was back when the hk airport landings where short and steep) I found this worked.. but unfortunately on returning form my trip I did all this.,, had slight sinusitis and it wasn’t enough to help me.. ouch … perforated eardrum..
those "earplane" ear plugs are supposed to be brilliant. only 2 uses per set though.. I’m thinking about getting some for my next trip in 4 weeks…. not cheap when I’ll need 5 sets to do the trip both ways kex

Here’s another neat trick I was taught by a flight attendant back when I was a kid. Ask the FA for a hot, moist towel and a cup. Put the towel in the cup and hold it over your ear. After about a minute, starting trying to pop your ears. Works like a charm! The warm moisture actually opens up the canal and relieves the pressue problem. Yes, you might look stupid holding a cup on your ear, but it’s better than the alternative (intense pain!) if nothing else works. I still use the technique to this day at home when I have a really bad cold and decongestants don’t work. Note: Be sure the towel is moist, not damp or sopping wet. Nothing more painful than having really hot water drip in your ear! * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping. Why the cup?! Doesn’t the cup block the heat?
