nose sprays and stuffed nose and sleep
Question:
Anyone tried nasonex or flonase which are corticosteroid nasal sprays for congestion if they had been having problems staying asleep from a stuffed up nose? Regards Cecelia
Response:
I use a rhinocart which is basically the same thing as flonase. Its been a year and a half now and I suspect it is not working as well as it used to.. I also take antihistimines now (in the spring) and the occasional decongestant, and I have a heated humidifier — these all help but some nights nothing seems to work. Anyone else have any ideas on stuffy noses, narrow nasal passages & CPAP? Have you tried the NEW Rhinocort Aqua? It’s been on the market since Jan./Feb. It really works wonderfully. Good luck! Happy Dreaming…

I use Flonase and Nasacort alternatively, my doc agreed to keep changing the script since I seemed to build a resistance if I used the same one continuously. Nasacort works best for me (if I had to compare) however they both don;t come close to the OTC solution of my choice – Afrin. About once or twice a week I use Afrin, it blasts congestion away quickly. However there is a price….I get stuffy in the pm the next day after use. Also, this can only be used for 3 days in a row max. Basically I save using it for the really bad days. For me and where I live, it is mostly bad congestion days, between the constant pollen & mold here in Florida, I have a cat which I react to only when I’m reacting to something else. No I can’t keep it out of the bedroom, I have moved back in with family and the cat is restricted to my space which is the equivalent to a very small efficiency apartment (bedroom sized "Room," a bathroom and a kitchen area with no door).

Some folk wil wonder why the hell you have a cat given your circumstances. I happen to like cats so I can understand you taking the allergy hit that may come your way as a result. I can;t have a cat simply because my wife is extremely allergic to them, my congestion is WAY dwon the scale compared to her reaction. This is also true for dogs unfortunately (and REAL men have dogs ….ruff ruff). It never dawned on me that I was addicted to it. My nose would run but I could breathe. That was better than stuffed. What I didn’t know is what it was doing to my sinuses. I was told I would be hospitalized if I couldn’t stop using it on my own. The doctor couldn’t see into my sinuses. I have not touched the stuff since.

Well, it wasn’t exactly my choice, I am more of a dog person myself. I got the cat a year before I moved to Florida as a birthday present, at a time I was living somewhere that didn’t allow dogs and I was also suffering from some depression and thought having the companion animal would be good for me. She is a cat with a lot of personality and smart as a whip. I don’t believe in disposable pets, I accepted the responsibility of caring for her, so she came with me when I moved.

I agree with the person below who warned people away from nose sprays. I have terrible snoring, often, but it is rarely enough to cause me to awaken feeling bad. I don’t like using any sort of medecine, but I had to work, so after a bout of the flu, I bought Wal-mart’s brand product (Equate) that contains oxymetazoline hydrochloride. It’s cheaper and clears away the stuffiness, but boy do you suffer when you try to wean yourself off of it! I’ve never used a product that is so clearly and so quickly addictive! Now, I won’t throw it away, because it DOES work, but I am definitely going to save it for absolute emergencies! The label warning is totally insufficient, because it took me two days to recover from it, after using it for 3 days. They don’t tell you that you WILL suffer withdrawal after only three days, and the withdrawal is WORSE than the original stuffiness! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<cece…@ecn.ab.ca> wrote in message news:38e41d72@ecn.ab.ca… > Anyone tried nasonex or flonase which are corticosteroid nasal sprays for > congestion if they had been having problems staying asleep from a stuffed > up nose? > Regards > Cecelia

If you end up worse for using it (even if it is days later when you wean yourself off), why on earth would you keep it? I used it for three days and stopped, and didn’t have withdrawal. I also only used it once a day (at night before bed), because during the day I could breathe through my mouth. Gary Rimar
