newbie: my sinuses….
Question:
Read www.ent-consult.com, www.sinuses.com and www.sinussurvival.com. After suffering for 5 years and having two surgeries, seeing many mainstream and alternative docs, I can say I am better! Yeah! Hang in there and educate yourself now. There is no easy cure. You may have to try many things. Be patient- it is worth it. http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/899250622.html Has some discussion of Vasomotor Rhinitis, which might be worth looking into if all your allergy tests turn up negative. http://www.jcaai.org/param/Rhinitis/Rhinitis.htm Has a short paragraph about rhinitis in athletes. Looks like you can get a note from your doctor if you take nasal steroids. The problem of keeping in shape while fighting sinusitis seems to be pretty widely reported in this news group. So you’re not alone. Mike Murray e-mail: mmurr…@uswest.net phone: 206.523.9736 music: http://www.users.uswest.net/~mmurray4

In the past year, I’ve been prescribed antibiotics I think half a dozen times, twice they were unsuccessful, for sinus infections. I’d be somewhat stuffy, but my lymph nodes in my neck would visibly swell, I’d have no energy, some nosebleeds, etc. I also race bikes and thanks to these infections, my trainer pulled me out of about half the race season this year. After being prescribed antiobiotics that have previously trashed my stomach over the phone, I canned my GP and went to an old one. He prescribed different antibiotics, which reduced the blockage to only about 50%, ran normal allergy tests, and then said he couldn’t do anything more for me. I found it a waste of time as this took several weeks during which I wasn’t training on the bike. After the allergy tests, I asked if I should see a specialist. He said I could if I want. So now I’ve hooked up with an ENT that I like so far–used to race bikes himself, so knows better than to tell me to give it up–and I had the CAT scan this week. Problem now is, my job ended so I’m trying to shove all the approvals, etc. down the HMO’s throat before I’m uninsured. I’ve searched on the web about this before and don’t like what I read–I’ve had enough of antibiotics, most of the steroids are probably not legal for use in competition. If I have allergies, they weren’t caught in the normal tests. This week was typical–I was feeling fine, was a bit tired one day, went for a night ride which was horrible–had no energy, couldn’t breathe well–then was sick the next day. My head just rocks, I have no sense of balance, energy is zapped. I’m so FRUSTRATED! Living in filthy, dry Phoenix, a lot of racers have these problems. What kills me is that the only way to feel better seems to be backing off training. I’m hoping the CAT scan will show something they can fix surgically. I’m going to be so angry if it doesn’t, as I don’t think I’ll be able to stay with this ENT long enough to do any long-term, symptomatic treatment. Finding a former bike racer physician was a lucky break. Anyway–I don’t smoke, but grew up in a smoking household as a kid. I think it could be genetic–my father always has a head cold and runny nose. He went through this whole routine–CAT scan and all that, and became resistent to several strains of antibiotics–ten years ago and isn’t any better off than when he started. He just lives with it, but he’s not as active as I am. Anyway, if anyone knows of a good starting point resource, a book or online, I’d appreciate it–also, if there’s anything out there addressing the steroid-competition issue. I checked the sites in the FAQ–they helped a little. Thanks–and I apologize for the rant-vent nature of this post. Normally on newsgroups I’m a pretty rational, businesslike poster, and promise to be in the future. –Jessica
