FAQs
Question:
How does one find the FAQs for this newsgroup??? thanks..john
Response:
John, the last faq was on 3/4/01. There are different ways to retrieve it. One way is to use Google Groups search at http://groups.google.com/ then enter "sinusitis faq" (be sure to spell it correctly in the search box), then click on "sort by date" and you’ll get it by going back a page or so. If this doesn’t work, e-mail me direct and i’ll offer another option….. Brad ————————————————– to email direct, remove Xspam.

I once downloaded the faq that appeared in this newsgroup. A few months later, it appeared again in this newsgroup, with a different date and version number on it. So, I ran a "diff" (a unix program that compares files) on the two, and except for the version number and date, they were IDENTICAL! —- Sure would be useful if these faq-postings changed their version numbers (and dates) ONLY when there had been ACTUAL MODIFICATIONS to the CONTENTS. I am sure that the faq could also show which lines have been changed — so that when we look at the new faq, we can somehow read ONLY the NEW stuff. Thanks, David

Would you be willing to maintain and post the FAQ ?

Not particularly — don’t know enought about the subject to maintain it, to add to it. All I was saying was that when whoever (you?) maintains the faq gets something new to add to it, that that person simply put a (dated) note somewhere, saying what was added, and where it got put. Or, in addition, a SMALL file of info to download, that info being the stuff being added to the faq. That too would be posted. David

Not I. Reid Goldsborough <reidg…@netaxs.com> has asked for someone else besides him to volunteer to post it periodically. He is cured and wants to pass it along to someone else. I do not think you need to know much – just be willing to post it. >maintains >the faq gets something new to add to it, that that person >simply put a (dated) note somewhere, saying what was added, >and where it got put.
Nobody has volunteered to take over posting it so far. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Or, in addition, a SMALL file of info to download, that >info being the stuff being added to the faq. >That too would be posted. >David

I could put the old FAQ on autopost until someone volunteers to maintain it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->>Or, in addition, a SMALL file of info to download, that >>info being the stuff being added to the faq. >>That too would be posted. >>David

That would be great, Larry! You’d be doing a big service. I’ll copy Reid and you as well by email to make sure he gets it. Reid: Am I correct in saying to Larry that this would be a big help? Please reply to both of us or post in the group since we would want your blessing since you wrote the FAQ. Also, is the copy on http://sinusitis.homestead.com/ the most recent and definitive copy it should be based on? Thanks! Don

How about twice a month? I could it post every ten days, monthly, or whatever. > Also, is the copy on http://sinusitis.homestead.com/ > the most recent and definitive copy it should be based on?
This thread was originally about the version number and I noticed the FAQ that was posted today didn’t have one. The last version I have is 4.5 so I’ll make this one 4.6, if that’s okay? Larry

I think either twice a month or every 10 days would be great! Actually every 10 days would be the better of the two in my opinion, in view of the short retention periods on many news servers. That is just my personal opinion. If anyone has any thoughts, please follow up. >This thread was originally about the version number and I noticed the >FAQ that was posted today didn’t have one. Actually there was a 5.2 posted on Dec. 1, 2000, that I have a copy of, and it also shows up in deja.com, so I think 5.3 would be next. Thanks you again for volunteering to post it!

I’ll wait a few days to see if there’s a consensus. >>This thread was originally about the version number and I noticed the >>FAQ that was posted today didn’t have one. Then it’s 5.3 until I hear otherwise. Larry

This is exactly what I was concerned about — why bump the version number UNLESS, IN FACT, it is DIFFERENT. I mean, typically (I think!) that people who rely on a faq for some info, when they see one being posted with a DIFFERENT version number, they DOWNLOAD it — "by golly, I wonder what new stuff they added, or what bugs and typos they fixed!". Two things are essential: . a version number that is *meaninful" (new number ==> some new info). . a "last modified date" in the file, as SUPER EASY way to see if date is more recent than when you last downloaded prior faq. . Sometimes, a file showing just the "DIFFERENCES" between the old and new version — so people can look only at the changes, instead of having to read through the whole thing again (X hours?). I don’t know what kind of OS you guys are using, but on the only system I am familiar with (unix), there comes with *any* unix the program "diff", which shows you the differences between two files, two computer-programs, whatever. Actually, if you don’t use unix, you can get from cygnus inc, ie www.cygnus.com, a whole set of unix "tools", for essentially FREE, — including "diff". I can help you get it. >> Actually there was a 5.2 posted on Dec. 1, 2000, that I have a copy of, >> and it also shows up in deja.com, so I think 5.3 would be next. >Then it’s 5.3 until I hear otherwise.
DITTO! How many people reading THIS newsgroup are going to see that new number, and then defensively ("better safe than sorry") download it to thier disk, taking, if the "new" version is *not* really different, (a) TIME to download (the fool thing
and (b) DISK SPACE (maybe scarce). > Larry
— Sorry I didn’t see this msg until just now. David

5.2 was posted in December. It was revised by Reid in Feb. (so he indicates at the end of it) and that revised version posted without number in Feb. (and the same unnumbered version posted last week). So I think 5.3 is indeed the correct number for the current version, that Larry has volunteered to re-post periodically. I doubt that the number has ever been bumped unless there was in fact a change. I do think your suggestion of DIFF’s is a good idea for the future, once we start updating it again. For now, let’s concentrate on getting the regular posting going again, though, since that alone will be a major accomplishment. (It had been suspended). Right now, there are no changes. I assume Larry will keep the version number constant at 5.3 until there are changes. We have to look for a volunteer to maintain (ie. update) it. Reid indicated that he does not want to do so any more.
