enbrel/sinus infec.

Question:

H Caroline!  I was prone to sinus infections before enbrel.  I ALWAYS get one at the beginning of school….hubby says its not sinus but that the kids make me sick LOL I think it’s my dusty, moldy room! Amy I live in a world of mystey and intrigue. I teach kindergarten.

Caroline, I am prone to sinus infections and have been for years.  It seems that  Enbrel brings them on easier and more frequently.  I know the literature with Enbrel states 38% of patients had an upper respiratory infection and 3% with sinusitis. Donna F.

Hi Polly, I had a sinus infection in July and was on antibiotics for 3 weeks. At the time I was on MTX and Arava. (Had to stop the Arava in August because of side effects.) I then started Enbrel on Oct 1 and got another sinus infection around Oct 15. My RD had me stop the Enbrel and it again took 3 weeks of antibiotics to get rid of the sinus infection. When I went back on Enbrel I had done 2 shots and then got an eye infection and had to stop Enbrel again for 10 days. (are you still with me?) When I saw my RD on Dec. 1 he cut my MTX injections by 50% hoping it would help lessen the infections. One question I asked him was, "Am I supposed to call you anytime I even suspect I have an infection?" His answer was "ABSOLUTELY-thats what we’re here for". Hope this helps answer your question. I’ve had chronic sinus infections since before I started Enbrel (1/30/99).  I;m now in the midst of one that started the 3rd week of September.  Still can’t get rid of it.  I’m seeing the ENT Thursday to discuss possible surgery. Anyway, I haven’t used Enbrel since this latest infection started, and my rheum said he’s not sure I should go back to it.  So, there it sits on my fridge shelf, taking up space.  Most of it is about to expire, so I have to call the city and see how to get rid of it.  Oh, well. Please……I’m sure your RD can help you put you in touch with someone who is paying full price with it…..on the sly of course.  Or maybe someone online could contact you in email to work something out.  Too expensive to waste! Did you guys with sinus infections have them before taking enbrel which then made you more prone to them or did you get the sinus infections for the first time with the drug? Caroline — did that question make sense — it did inside my head <g – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Polly, I’m on Enbrel and on my second sinus infection in 3 months.  I’m taking an antibiotic and have stopped the Enbrel for another 2 weeks, which I’m sure will set me back.  I’ve heard sinus infections are the most frequent infections with Enbrel.  I hope I can get over this and stay on Enbrel, but at this rate, I don’t know. Donna F. Is anyone taking Enbrel who has recurring sinus infections?  I heard that unless you have a bacterial infection it is ok.  What have you heard?  I know alot of sinus prob are around…. Were you off the Enbrel for that whole time? (August to October)

This seems to vary from RD to RD.  I had an upper-resp. infection while on enbrel and was told to keep taking it.  Likewise, our enbrel posterchild, Gloria, has reported that she has not stopped enbrel for minor infections. Others here have reported that their docs have them hold the enbrel. Yeppers.  The doctor said it was OK…..but I skipped 2 shots.  I really wanted to make sure the antibotics (the last round I was on) did their job…and lo and behold I got better…..:O) Amy I live in a world of mystery and intrigue. I teach kindergarten.
