Cowboy….I admire your discipline, but honestly?  I would take the day off. Sharp pains are not to be ignored.  By spinning you could do more damage that would keep you from your exercise longer than a day.  But hey…I better mind my manners…IMO.  heheheh Adreeanna — My favorite Sites and hangouts  http://members.tripod.com/neighborhood-bar/ http://trollarchive.onza.net/ my NEW before and after pics: http://dietchef.ecorp.net/adreeanna/

Response:

It didn’t hurt too badly.  I also did an aerobics class.  The knee only hurt about a dozen times.

Have you considered an ace bandage or something for additional support? Would that help?

Pay attention to your body. If it stops hurting after it warms up, that’s probably a good thing, and I’d continue with non weight bearing exercise, but again, be careful once you get off the machine.  If it continues hurting for more than  a few minutes of spinning, maybe taking a day off and just doing some stretching, or even resting, might help. I’ve noticed that since we’ve got stairs, my knee acts up even more. I’m hoping once I get rid of this sinusitis/bronchitis/walking pneumonia and get back into working out I can get everything functioning again!

Response:

Watch it, but I know what you mean, I get weird, sudden stabbing pains from various parts of my body at any point and they hurt like hell. Mostly I ignore them. I can usually tell the difference between something that is likely to be a real problem, from something that is not. Persistent pain though can indicate a potential problem. Response:

I would guess that is the case…ragged.  I did do the rehab "like a demon," but looking back maybe it was too much too soon.  Maybe I should have done a little less at the start and then upped it later.  Because the first year (with rehab) I spent trying to just walk without limping.  I tried so hard to get right back into it.  It’s been over 2 years now and I feel I am making some progress.  Anyway, sometimes those ragged pieces get somewhat hung up and I believe movement is the best to keep things "oiled".  Lots of water helps keep the cartilage healthier.  My DH got a kidney stone during a time we were doing a lot of hot weather running.  He thought he was drinking enough water, but increased it and never got any more.  That was about 8 years ago.  He was also having a little gout symptoms that cleared up with more water. (big toe)  Doe Hi, Dee,  Doe Don’t worry about the hee hee.  Sure, I was being serious, but I was saying it in a self-deprecating comical way.

Well, then I did read you right!  : ) If I ever DO need arthroscopic surgery I’d be disappointed but I’d rehab like a demon. I suspect the cartilage is more ragged than torn, but who knows? Cowboy

I had knee surgery two years ago, torn miniscus(sp).  The worst part of the whole was trying to get my fat body in a slim MRI:)).  The knee is better now. Mike W

Response:

Cowboy, in my earlier reply I hadn’t realized that you were completely serious.  It was my thinking that you had some soreness and were making the point that you were not going to use it as an excuse for not doing the exercise.  Sorry for the "hee hee."  Your description of the sharp pain as you bent over to pick up the paper reminds me of my meniscus cartilage tear.   I was down on my knees cleaning a stone floor and I felt this sharp tearing pain in the side of my knee.   I had arthroscopic surgery, but (probably due to my aging cartilage) I was never able to return to my former condition. It just took me too long to accept that I would not be running and racing any more and to accept another form of exercise. There are, as you say other exercises.  But, I *loved* the running!   Also, a person with gout should be drinking lots of water.  But, I am sure you already know that.  The biking is helping strengthen the muscles surrounding my knee joint and helping it more than all the rehab I had.  The orthopedist said that my x-rays showed me to have the knees of a 30 year old!  The cartilage was not worn away.  But following the surgery he said the cartilage was ragged and there was a tear in the Meniscus.  If it comes to that …arthroscopic surgery does work wonders for most people.   Let us know how you get along.  Hope you heal up.  Doe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Poor Cowboy…. he’s become an old man all of a sudden. =) Yeah, you may have something there. I suspect these little nagging injuries are from a LOT of pounding my joints, but some of it is from gout, and its attendant gouty arthritis, which is affecting my knee’s cartilage. I also neglected to drink ANY water today.  dumb Cowboy, I am! I will NEVER stop excercising.  If I ever have to stop aerobics, I’d find something else.  Still, I like spinning around an a step a lot! Cowboy

Athlete’s like figure skaters often work through the pain. You may numb the pain but in so doing worsen your injury.  Pain is nature’s way of alerting us to the fact that something is wrong. Knees are tricky things- if the pain keeps up I should certainly see a doctor if I were you.  I have had knee problems in the past and they can really mess up one’s life.  Take care and I hope that it is better soon. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Late this morning, as I went into a crouch, to pick up a paper, my left knee felt like it was pierced in the cartilage by a screwdriver.  It was not.  It hurts. Sure go ahead and spin!  ; )  A little pain …no biggie.  If there is a real injury it will show up soon enough.  The spinning will be a great way to test it out!   If it gets to where you can no longer walk…then you will have to spin anyway!  hee hee   So.. enjoy! Lol…. Doe

My older brother (who I live with) always yells at me from his couch-throne, when I complain about having to run or lift because I’m sore or I hurt… "There’s a difference between pain and injury!" :) I agree with Doe – it’ll turn up soon enough if it’s a problem.  Have fun! It’s an exercise class on a stationary bike—-my gym has a karaoke class which is ok and everything but i can’t do the stand cycling (I can’t find a comfy "spot") so I don’t do it…it’s a good class especially if you want a sore butt for like 4 days after a class! : ) — Connie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – ummm, what is spinning? Ok that’s fine—I’m not going to say "there, there" when you get a boo boo because I warned you…oh wait, I’m in  mommy mode! LOL I wear my brace to play tennis and amazingly enough I can move freely with it…it took me a while to get used to it but now it is my safety blanket — Connie
