Bad Smell

Question:

I went to my GP(who is also an ENT specialist) last week with a really bad smell in my nose. He decided that it was probably a sinus problem. This fits quite well with some other unexplained syptoms. He has prescribed steroid drops, which are having very little effect at the moment. At first, i thought that the bad smell was just halitosis, and I was very releived to find out that it was due to a sinus problem. However, I am wondering whether it likely that other people can smell the smell that I can smell? If this is the case, then I’ll have to start worrying about the bad breath again! Any help would be greatly appreciated, Chris

Sinusitis can cause bad breath. You should have asked your ENT if he smelled any bad breath coming from you.  Call him on the phone and ask.  Or ask a trusted friend if you’ve got bad breath. — Steven L.

I had this problem on and off for nearly a year. The cause in my case turned out to be an oro-antral fistula, which is an opening between the mouth and the sinus, enabling the same bacteria which cause bad breath to migrate into the maxillary sinus where they flourish. Antibiotics restrain it for a while, but on stopping the antibiotics it returns. The smell is truly awful, containing compounds appropriately called putrescene and cadaverine     The fistula in my case was caused by a tooth extraction that I had previously had at the site, and where a small ulcer had developed. This of course may have no bearing on your case, but if you’ve had any dental work done recently, it’s something you might want to check out. My periodontist fixed the problem by abrasing the site of the ulcer enabling tisue to grow over it and to close it. Neil

I don’t think it can be anything to do with dental work, mainly becasue I haven’t had anything done for years! i think ‘cadaverine’ is probably a very descriptive name for what I can smell right now!! Anyway, I’m back to my GP next week. I’ll have to see what he thinks. Chris
