Rhinitis/Sinusitis and UC
Question:
I’ve had a condition diagnosed as perennial vasomotor Rhinitis for which I’ve taken various corticosteroid sprays to limited degrees of help (symptoms are inflamed, draining and congested sinuses and passages with no discernable triggers since I was tested for allergies and none were found). My question is- Is this common amongst UC or IBD sufferers? Is it possible that the same mechanism that afflicts one mucous membrane affect another in a seemingly divergent bodily system. Any professional or possible?
Response:
I too have sinusitis, but everyone in Maine does. DAWN

Bert- I finally have my sinuses under control for the first time in years. Here is the combination of things that works for me. Note, YMMV. Guaifenesin tablets – 600 mg. twice a day Claritin tablets – 10 mg. once a day Aleve tablets – 2 of them twice a day Saline nasal spray – as often as I want I have purposely stayed away from the steroid nasal sprays as they can cause even more inflammation. I have gone from having sinus infections every other month or more to about two a year. That is a drastic improvement and my doctors are all pleased. I also try to stay away from new smells as much as possible as they always trigger and allergic-type reaction in me. I have only a mild allergy to dust. My doctor explained what I have which bears the same name as yours as hyperactive sinuses triggered by new smells and overwhelming old smells as well as a reduced immune system in my nose. Once again, my immune system is off doing something that it shouldn’t. Anyway, you might want to give the above medicines a try. The doc has explained to me that I will be on them the rest of my life if I want to stay relatively healthy. I think it is worth it for the relief alone. Louise
