I agree. The cost of CT scans has come down to the point that it just isn’t worth doing X-rays anymore. > Anyway, she seems to think it is allergy caused,
why? do you have hay fever-type symptoms? > and has prescribed Zyrtec > (maybe spelled wrong), an antihistimine, to try. First, I’m surprised she’s trying antihistamines. There are both allergic and non-allergic forms of rhinitis (I have the non-allergic variety) that can lead to sinus infections, and antihistamines are useless with the non-allergic form. I don’t remember if you had said you had tried steroid nasal sprays already; if not, ask your doc about Rhinocort. Steroid nasal sprays can alleviate most forms of rhinitis, allergic or not. Neither an ENT or an allergist can substitute for one another. The allergist will help you if you have true allergies; if you have non-allergic rhinitis then all s/he can do is prescribe the steroid nasal sprays, which the ENT could do anyway. The ENT can find anatomical abnormalities (e.g. deviated septum, thickened sinus linings, polyps, cysts, etc.) that can cause sinusitis. But if you have allergies, then polyps and cysts will recur unless the allergies are treated. It’s too bad there are no specific treatments for the causes of non-allergic rhinitis. Allergy shots can desensitize you to dust, molds, etc.; but my problem is air pollution and there is no way to desensitize me to that. — Steven D. If I were you, I’d wait on the meds., ask your physician to order a CT and make an appt. to see an ENT (sometimes you could wait a month for an appt.) Find out what the ENT has to say, seems physicians usu. play a guessing game as to what the problem is and how to treat it. After that, see an allergist and see if there are elements that you can control to ease your symptoms. I’ve had the CT and have seen an ENT (who said sooner or later I will need surgery). After hearing so much about the misery of surgery and how alot do not get better, I’m making surgery my last option. I’ve been following my ENT’s advice, and am taking Nasacort besides all the other things you’re supposed to do and I have had one sinus infection since the end of May (but I usually have it worse at the end of winer (march)). So before I get to that point, I’m going to see an Allergist. Thank you everyone for your responses…I found out my X Ray results which my doctor said were "remarkably clear," but she, too, said that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t something there. Why waste the time with an X-Ray? Anyway, she seems to think it is allergy caused, and has prescribed Zyrtec (maybe spelled wrong), an antihistimine, to try. If that doesn’t work she said she’d either order CT scans, then send me to an ENT, or I could just go to an ENT. I wonder if I should go to an allergist, or if the ENT would serve the same purpose?
