newcomer needs help with constant headache – please!
Question:
Hi Steve, This may sound crazy, but one of the side effects is sinus problems not the other way around. I get migraines on the left side of my head, and the left side of my nose is clogged and constantly runs, I can go through almost a whol box of tissues. I am also on Zoloft 100mg, for 3 months now, also I take Esgic-Plus as an abortive. I have been getting migraines for over 20 years but only found out they were migraines 2 years ago, I always called them "pains in my head" because they just didn’t feel like normal headaches, now I know why. Last month I only had 2 minor migraines (#3 was the hardest pain) and 4 headaches (I normally get 10 migraines a month with a #10 in there somewhere). I have also adjusted my diet, but I think maybe the Zoloft has a lot to do with it. How did you do on the Zoloft? Candy

Steve, Wow, sounds like you’ve really been through the wringer! Just out of curiosity, did Mayo give you any kind of diagnosis? CDH? Anyway, all I can suggest is that sometimes it takes combinations of drugs to work rather than just one at a time. Hopefully you will get lots of good information as well as support from this group as I have. Good luck, and welcome. Judy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I woke up one morning two years ago with a headache and I have had it ever since. The pain has not changed since that first morning, and it has the classic sinusitis symptoms ( pain is dramatically increased when I bend over, cough, sneeze, or do anything that increases pressure to the brain). I have had 3 endoscopic sinus surgeries, 4 MRI’s, 1 MRI-MRA, 5 CT’s and all to no avail. I just returned from a week at the Mayo Clinic, and they performed the usual blood tests, a lumbar puncture, and a new CT. They had no answers other than my sinuses are not the cause. Over this 2 year period the Dr’s have tried the following meds: 1) many antibiotics 2) Predisone – 60mg daily 3) Prozac 4) Elivil 5) Zolof and I am presently taking 24mg of cyproheptadine daily. Nothing so far has made even the slightest change in the HA. Please help if you can! Thank you! Steve Smart

Hi Steve, Well, you’ve certainly been going through it, and it sounds like you’ve been tested for about any possibility. I know how frustrating it is. A lot of us feel like we wish they’d found something wrong in any of the tests so it could be fixed. I’m wondering about the prevent meds you’ve tried. Did you try one at a time, combinations, long or short periods of time? Many times, maybe most times, it takes a combination of things together to make a difference. The combination isn’t the same for everyong. It’s pretty much a trial and error thing. You have to make sure you’ve tried taking them a long enough period of time that they’ve had the chance to build up in your system. I couldn’t begin to tell you how long is long enough, or even if the timetable would always be the same. I just know that I’ve always had to take whatever prevents I was trying for more than a few weeks before a determination was made on success or failure. Pain meds aren’t decided on one try, either. A lot of things work sometimes, but not other times. I still don’t know which times what things will work for me. I just have to try til I hit something. I’m sorry I can’t be of any help to you. I’d like to welcome you, though. There are a lot of people here who can give a lot of information. I’m glad you came across this group. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did. ~Cyndi No one would talk much in society, if he knew how often he misunderstands others.
