Whoa – 18 miles? Cool! How long has it taken you to build up to that. Not too long, in fact; I’ve only been cycling maybe once a fortnight for the last couple of months, and probably the most I’ve done before yesterday was about seven miles. I do have a very strict weekend walking regimen, though, and have been walking between five and fifteen miles once a week for about a year. I guess that helped with the aerobic and leg-muscle build-up.
Ah – so you were already in pretty good shape. A fortnight – 2 weeks? I’m guessing it’s a bit easier for you to do that than it would be in a major city. From your description, it sounds like you’re in a rural type setting. Depends on your definition of "rural"
. I’m in Bristol, the largest city in the south west of England, but most UK cities aren’t really that far away from countryside. I probably did about eight miles out of those 18 in an urban/suburban setting, with the rest of it being river towpaths, forest tracks or just plain countryside. I live in an inner city area, but I can be in a forest after twenty minutes’ walking, and then not see "city" again for another thirty miles if I choose the right paths…
That would be COOL… For me to ride 18 miles, I’d have to dodge about 1000 cars… Me too, if I went in the wrong direction. Luckily we have a national cycle network, with well-marked routes and good maps, and so on, and it’s getting easier to avoid the traffic as the network’s being added to all the time. It’s still a pain to get about in urban areas, but I can, for example, get to the next town along from mine, about 12 miles away, without seeing a car for 8 of those miles…
No such luck here. We have two choices:ride on the sidewalk, and dodge pedestrians/curbs/other obstacles, or ride in the street and dodge cars. If I get the bike rack someone else mentioned, then I could throw the bike on the car and drive to a more ‘peaceful’ area…<g Eldred — Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage – http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank – under construction… Never argue with an idiot. Walked 12 miles in Washington D. C. on saturday the 7th and saw the Cherry blossoms by the Jefferson memorial and also in Bethesda. Beautiful, First exercise in a long time; I hope my sinusitis regimen holds up; otherwise–surgery for same.
Response:
actually, I walked 12 mi. on Saturday, the sixth, not the 7th. On SUNDAY, 4/7/02, I walked 6 hilly miles and planned to do more, but was too tired, with sore feet and knee as it was on pavement, not a natural path.

Question:
I suffered a cold that started about 9/18 and it pretty much ran it`s course. There was nothing unusual about and it was followed by a cold sore that usually forms after a bad cold. However, I never regained my full taste/smell. I visited my doctor on 10/10 who said I still showed signs of infection and I was given an antibiotic shot and prescribed an antibiotic (Cephalexin 500mg) and an decongestant (Profen Forte DM) which I really didn`t feel I needed as I didn`t feel congested nor did I feel like my sinuses were blocked enough to cause loss of taste. Anyway, here it is 10/15 and nothing has improved. I smell/taste some things better than others, especially my shampoo and soap…most chemicals and foods with strong flavors…sharp cheeses, smoked meats etc.. I seem to be able to smell and taste better first thing in the morning (I can taste my coffee and that horrible morning taste that follows) but as the day goes on it dulls. I have about 2 days of antibiotics left but I don`t feel they`ve done anything for me. Anyway, I`m not sure why I`m here except that someone suggested I might have sinusitis and I discovered this n.g. I don`t have insurance so I only see my doctor when I really need to, but I guess another visit is a must. I`ve never had this problem before. Does anyone have any wisdom to share? I am not sure, unfortunatly for me, that is usually temporary. I am afraid to have lost definitively my senses of smell and taste after a long period of polyposis (in french : polypose naso sinusienne) and two operations (1998 and 2000). What is your own experience ? I’ve just find an umpteenth article about anosmia on the following web address : www.bcm.tmc.edu/oto/grand/91594.html Thank you for your contribution.

Well, this is baffling the hell out of me. It was just a pathetic little cold that was no different than any other I`ve ever had. It ran it`s course and that was that. And I don`t suffer allergies/sinus problems that I`m aware of and I feel just fine physically……no congestion, sinus pressure, headache, weird mucus and I`ve never had nasal surgery or head trauma ….nothing what-so-ever! I eat right, exercise, my diabetes is well under control (average BG= 110)….what the hell? Gene…sitting here NOT tasting his coffee.

I lost my sense of smell for months after surgery. It came back eventually. It is a common side effect of surgery and is usually temporary. Nadine

I had decent smelling abiility before surgery, and diminished smell since (sometimes none at all, sometimes a little). I think sinusitis or something in that braod category could definitely diminish your olfactory sense. My suggestion is you try to get health insurance!! How long ago was your surgery? Any infection present? Any congestion? Have you tried an oral steroid (prednisone) – any olfactory improvement? If the inflammation is under control and no infection is present, I would be suspicious for olfactory nerve damage during surgery. Resection of the turbinates, tearing of olfactory mucosa and "stripping" of the skull base during surgery can permanently destroy part or all of your sense of smell. A recent CT scan and an endoscopic exam of the upper nasal cavity by a reputable sinus surgeon will be required for a proper evaluation. MM

This is my first time to this newsgroup, as I have sought it out in desperation. I have had three endoscopic surgeries over the last 6 years, each in a different sinus area. The most recent one was two weeks ago for scope out the ethnoids. I have had one debridement but am still experiencing the same symptons I had before surgery: excessive post-nasal drip, bad breath, swelling/pressure near the top of my nose between the eyes. I have also experienced a light-headed sensation each time I physically exert myself doing things like working out. I have also found myself feeling tired more often. I am trying to continue what I consider to me a normal routine because I don’t want to fall into a cycle of laziness. The only advice my ENT has given me is to use a saline spray every 3-4 hours. Is there an end of the road to this? Can anyone tell me what I should expect over the next month or so? Is there anything I can do to help myself in addition to the advice my ENT has provided? I’ve heard about a recipe for a "sinus-wash" involving baking soda and pickling salt. (Where can I find pickling salt?) Does anyone have this recipe and advice on how to apply it? Any advice and encourage would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Question:
I guess one has to be trusting. It’s good to know that the septoplasti has helped you Tom. If I were to guess, the opening up of the deviated septum will reduce the chances of getting your nose plugged the next time you are hit by a cold. If the septum can be kept open better drainage will occur, which is a requirement for keeping infection at bay. Perhaps there are other reasons as well, but I can’t think of any. I certainly will report the recovery, after affects and results to this group. Del. "Salgoud Dell" <salg…@cfu.net> wrote in message

Del – I just had the procedure this past Thursday (19th), because I had minimal breathing on one side & was prone to infection on that same side. It was discovered through the CT’s that I also had developed two distinct pollops (sp). In my opinion, no operation should be taken lightly, particularly a septoplasty… seems fairly radical to me… but having consented & resigned to it, I’ll have to believe that I will feel better, more free-breathing will result, etc. If I could breath normally, I would not consent to this procedure. July 14, 2001 Most contributors to this newsgroup have said of their septoplasti : "I say it is about 75% helpful". It is a PART of the solution, and the one most people seem to have had. I would agree it has helped my rhinitis and sinus infections to a great degree, BUT… I have just had my first sinus infection in 1.5 years and am now trying to wean away from decongestants.. Oh joy oh (sniff) thrill… One ENT told me it would not help and my current ENT said "just DO it". I am glad I had it done. While bloody annoying, this latest sinus infection was not as devastating to my head as prior to the septoplasti. That includes headaches, by the way. Anything that gets more air into our snouts can’t really hurt. Just don’t count on leaving this newsgroup behind the day after the operation, or even the year after. Good luck to a fellow traveller and sufferer. Typical non-answer doctor, you have to make them give you answers. Nothing I have ever read connects septoplasty with relieving headaches (usually done to correct breathing problems or sinus infections). http://www.voice-center.com/septo.html contains a brief description. What can cause headaches are the turbinates/anything being too large and pressing on sensitive nerves in the nasal passages (especially the superior and middle turbinate-most doctors only feel comfortable working on the lower turbinate). At least this was the case for me, had horrible headaches all cleared up by turbinate reductions. Disclaimer, headaches can be caused by an endless number of problems. I suggest researching your upcoming nasal surgery thoroughly and discussing everything with the doctor. "Salgoud Dell" <salg…@cfu.net> wrote in message

This latter is probably the more significant surgery. >This >I think I need because the The CT’s looked cloudy in the nearly all the >sinuses. >However, by using Nasacort I do not have any trouble breathing out of my >nostrils nor do I have any allergies… just the headaches which are usually >mild. One frequent reason reason is so that they can get the endoscope in to do the actual sinus opening surgery. The septoplasty is fairly minor. > Is it necessary or does the Doc just need another fee.
Since you are skeptical, put it off for a while and get some further opinions. I would go to a University medical center and get an opinion from a sinus surgery specialist. It’s just their best guess that sinusitis may be causing the headaches you are complaing of and that opening them may allow them to heal. It’s up to you to make the final call.

I have been suffering headaches and after two CT’s have been scheduled for surgery. The ENT wants to do a septoplasti to correct a deviated septrum (I have had another ENT say the septum is mildy deviated.) At the same time, the Doc will perform an endoscopic sinus operation on all the sinuses. This I think I need because the The CT’s looked cloudy in the nearly all the sinuses. However, by using Nasacort I do not have any trouble breathing out of my nostrils nor do I have any allergies… just the headaches which are usually mild. So, I asked the Doc by email… since I could breathe o.k. why were we doing the septoplasti? His nurse answered back, (I guess he doesn’t do email.) that the setoplasti was necessary but, she didn’t say why. Anyone know why this septoplasti should be performed to reduce headache pain? Is it necessary or does the Doc just need another fee. Del

I get virtually no pain for any of my 6-7 infections per year. Many/most people report pain/pressure on their foreheads etc. I never have that. I get the yellow/green mucus and a lot of fatigue. I am not sure what all of this means, except that the no pain situation does happen in some of us. I also do all these sinus irrigations but at the end of the day the only thing that really helps is antibiotics (I had surgery but it did not help). good luck <Johnny1…@webtv.net> wrote in message

Hello… I just recently had a major flare-up with my sinusitis. For the past four days I have been irrigating just about every three hours (even at night), and everytime I’d be flushing out blobs of the yellow/green thick mucus. Things have settled down since I started on the Levaquin a few days ago. However, I felt rotten for most of the last 4 days…. Very sore throat, upset stomach, fatigue, chills … but very little pain from the sinuses. —And overall, although I was congested, my nose was clear enough to continue the irrigation. I have had sinus infections for over 30 years. Recently they have gotten worse. Have been on Flonase…doing saline solution..nasal vaporizer..sudaphed and have been given biaxin, augmentin, claretin over past few months. Had a Cat Scan a few weeks ago. Doctor says sinus passages are "pristine" but that I have a deviated septum and should have a septoplasty procedure done. I dunno why after 30 yrs that only now a doctor is finding this out but can anybody tell me about this procedure and how effective it may be??? I have had a bad sinus infection for 4 days now and have to start a new job tomorrow and do not want to miss work..any suggestions an a good med to clear up this infection. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It’s not a direct cure for sinusitis, It just allows better air flow. Sometimes the deviation is so severe that it blocks insertion of the endoscope to see what is going on. The turbinate on the concave side may be squeezed and air flow blocked. Also sometimes the turbinate on the convex side is irritated by te increased air flow. and becomes swollen. So you need to find out why he recommends it and how much he thinks it will help. Also get some second opinions. If he is a general ENT doctor, but not a specialist in nose and sinus surgery, I would probably not have any nose and surgery surgery done by him. I think now that people are well-advised to have all nose/sinus surgery done by sub-specialists in that area. Overall, though, it is fairly minor surgery, I think, compared to the sinusectomies and sinusotomies some of us have had. It may just be in the "might help" category. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I have had a bad sinus infection for 4 days now and have to start a new >job tomorrow and do not want to miss work..any suggestions an a good med >to clear up this infection. >Any input would be greatly appreciated. >Thank you

OK. Christine, this is not intended as a flame. Just a little bit of gentle persuasion. If you don’t like it throw it out. But I will ask that you hear me out then say no, that my advice sucks and you don’t think it is worthwile.
: my baby is 7 months old, and has been bf the whole time. He is eating some : solids, a little bit 2 – 3 times a day. Sounds normal for a 7 month old. : I am going back to work 2 days per week in february. OK. : anyway, i think the time has come to wean. If you wean, you will most certainly have to wean to formula. You son is still too young to be nourished well by solid foods and/or cow’s milk. Formula is still a far inferior food to breastmilk, and the AAP recommends breastfeeding for at least one year. Multiple medical studies have shown that babies that are breastfed for at least a year have far fewer of certain illnesses than those that are not. Most significant are diabetes, ashtha, ear infections, and other allergy related problems (sinusitis). : I am sick of: I am a little reluctant to tackle this list. I am afraid I might sound to argumentative if I answer it point for point, but on the other hand, I know that many of the points have a good response. I will answer what I think I can. : *waking up in pain and wet almost every morning I’m not sure I understand. Are you saying that you are still getting engorged? This is pretty rare past 6 months. How often does your son nurse at night. What is the longest interval between nursing. Average answers to these questions are 2 to 3 times a night and 4 hours between nursings, although by 7 months 6 hours is common also. : *the nipple dermatitis making me itchy Have you tried Lansinoh? Maybe a mom who has conquered this problem can help. Monika never had this problem. : *the occasional bite (he has 8 teeth) This sounds pretty average, too. (actually 8 teeth is a bit on the high side, but ours started teething at 3 months, so I’ve seen it). Children can be taught not to bite, and the methods are posted quite frequently to this ng. : *having giant breasts that people always accidentally bump into, mind you, i : dont suppose this will instantly fix without surgery I think you have something here about it not fixing the problem. Also don’t expect them to go down immediately because you wean. Also expect some painful time while they stay engorged and unused. : *having to expose myself at dinner parties etc I must say that unless you are wearing strapless tops, I don’t understand this one at all. With the tops and nursing dresses that Monika wears, it is alll but impossible to tell that she is nursing. : *close to zero libido, and even when it does fire up, breasts are out of : contention. I have heard some nursing women say this, but I have also heard many women of babies who were NOT nursing saying they have no libido because of the time spent caring for the baby. Don’t expect that just because you stop nursing, you baby will sleep through the night. And worse, when he wants to eat at 3 am, you have to get up and fix a bottle of formula. Just additional hassle you don’t need. And regarding the breasts being out of contention, I don’t understand that one either. Are you saying that your husband doesn’t want to play with them because the baby is nursing, or that you won’t let him? Monika and I never had that problem.
: This little guy has had ownership rights of my body since around about : august 99, and i think i want it back. I have heard Monika say that she wants her body to herself for a couple of hours, but never permanently. It does great if I or older brother take the kids out for an afternoon and she gets a break. Maybe you need a few more breaks. : I am convincing myself here as much as anyone else. I know it is not the : best thing for him, but I think i want my body back. Think about what you are getting. Think if there is some compromise that will allow you to have your body back part time, and if that is enough to keep you sane and happy. I think the best way to test this is to arrange so that you can take some pretty big breaks from taking care of baby (half a day or so, just doing what *YOU* want to do) and see if that will keep you going. : I would love to hear anyones suggestions or thoughts. I am not expecting : flames, these NG’s are not like that…. Like I said, I hope you do not take this as a flame. It is just an alternative viewpoint. I think there are ways to give you more freedom and still keep your precious son on breastmilk until he is ready for a real diet of adult food. I hope you will consider it. : TIA : christine : mother of jeremy 25 may 2000 Good luck, Larry

Well it sounds like maybe you are torn? Can you wean him as far as just dropping down the number of feedings for him? Continue to breastfeed him but make it less often until he decides to go just for the bottle or something? Cold turkey weaning is hard, trust me I have been there, I had to stop for some meds I was taking..and I felt somehow guilty…but in order to avoid all that mayb you can make a slow transition. Hello… When I had my cat scan done, my ENT said that I had a polyp in my left max. …I’ve never had any noticeable problems on the left side of my face, but the right —-Well, I had a major sinusitis flair-up there in /83. Terrible pain, like a couple of tooth abscesses just below my eye. …So my questions: Is it possible to have a polyp without it causing any problems? …And 2) Is it possible the reader of the scan has got the sides of my face backwards? Thanks…Jon
Response:
I am having polyp surgery. My Doctor told me he has seen people with polyp on one side of maxillary and the teeth pain on the other. My CT showed the left side filled and thats where the pain is. But I have had days with the pain on the right. Very strange. I would get a secound opinion and see if the polyp should be removed. Also see if the septum is straight. And turbinates if you are glogged up. Good luck

Dr. Grossan, I have taken prednisone in the past, but have been wary to use it too frequently. I always hear that it is a dangerous steroid and should be used as infrequently as possible. I also use Flonase on a daily basis. While I have avoided steroids because of their dangers, I’m not certain what those particular dangers actually are. If anyone could point me to websites which contain information on the dangers of steroids which are frequently used by sinusitis sufferers, I would be very appreciative. Also, do you know of any other factors related to the production of poyps? I want to do everything that I can to shift the odds in my favor for the success of my upcoming third surgery. Thank you.

Yep, it’s the ethmoid. I don’t really notice any difficulty with the ethmoid. In fact, I was bit surprised to hear that the doctor would be putting windows up there. I’m so used to the "foggy-headed" feeling and general congestion/pressure all over my face that I hadn’t really pin-pointed the ethmoid as a problem area. When you ask "Is this a daily problem?" I’m not certain what you mean. Yes, general sinus trouble is a daily occurrence. But the main thing that interests me about your response is the reference to staph. I have had chronic staph infections for as long as I have had sinus problems (ten years). When my most recent ENT suggested doing a third surgery I mentioned to him that I carried staph, as I had been told that I should also pass along this information prior to a surgery, but seemed uninterested–almost like he didn’t understand why I was bringing up a seemingly unrelated illness. I don’t mean to slander the doctor– I could easily have misread his reaction. But please, tell me all that you can about how these two factors relate to each other! Thanks so much. This seems like it could be a very enlightening development in treating my particular troubles.

Jeff – I would suggest that you have a culture done of your sinuses to see what bacteria you are dealing with – my sinus problems started out like yours now fifteen years later I have big sinus problems Oh a sinus culture is painless
Response:
Hi, I am an 18 yr old guy who is just having a heck of a time lately with what i believe is some sinus problems. I’ve had allergies my whole life (nothing major just high grade hayfever, etc) i’ve been on allergy shots for about 3 years and then i discontinued them since I was on max desensitization and only going about every 3 months for "boosters". Every time I can ever recall getting sick my entire life always starts out with a stuffy nose and then sometimes it will clear up and other times it will turn into bronchitis if i wait too long and dont go to the doctor. For the last years I can remember I get sick once, maybe twice a year, no more. Usually bad bronchitis once a year unless i make a visit to the doc early on when i notice the symtoms. Since last novemeber I started getting consistant dizzy spells, not vertigo, but feeling of being unbalanced, never had that before, but I am a noted hypocondriact so I wait, and wait, finally in decemeber I visit the doc. He says I have an ear infection, take 14 days of zithromax, except I have no other symtoms of anything except the dizzyness, but I do have pressure in my sinsuses and on a side note the doctor says, by the way if this gets any worse let me know and we will do a brain MRI to make sure you dont have anything major going on. So from that point on I cant sleep so I get the MRI done and its clear, except for small amounts of mucus in the sinuses (clearing of a sinus infection). I also had full blood work done, basically normal except slightly low potassium and low blood sugar (67!) the doctor suggests I go back for a check for hypoglicemia and I never do since I near pass out when they draw blood and I just dont think thats it, plus my family has a history of low blood sugar my dad usually has around a 70-75 and same with my grandmother, plus my symtoms dont improve when i bring my blood sugar up. So i get a little better, not so dizzy, just a little and continue living. Now in march (3 months later) I get a bad sinus infection, real plugged, colored mucus, post nasal drip, the works. So I promptly go to the doctor says I have sinusitis and gives me 5 days of zithromax and some claritin-d. Get better and no more dizzyness, I thought I beat it, i’d been great for about 2 months. So now I am here with no symtoms except dizzyness and pressure between my eyes, which seems to be the linking factor, when i get the pressure i get the dizzyness, etc. This just recently started about a week ago, its tolerable, but an inconvience. I really dont want to be put back on more antibiotics, but whats left except sinus surgery? I need to go see an ENT, which my allergist is, but I am wondering.. I had the MRI, if I was having severe sinus problems wouldn’t it have shown up on that? What other options do I have? My nose is not stuffed, I have clear mucus (but alot of it), it feels like my sinses between my eyes are where the pressure is at, I am taking some perscription Guafenisin that i have left over from december, without any success. So life just sucks lately, any experiences, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Jeff Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Question:
Hello All, First post on this newsgroup. I have been going thru 4 surgeries to find out that I need another surgery. I have been seeing 3 doctors now, the latest not being a surgeon but specialized in allergies & sinusitis. The latest surgery was achieved by computer guided image (instatrak) but my surgeon was not very experienced with the procedure. Where can I find information on surgeon that have extensive experience with Instatrak ? I called the ama but was reffered to their website which did not help …. Thank you in advance for any info you can provide Best regards. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!
