cat allergies
Question:
Hello. Im very allergic to cats, but want one. Anyone out there have cats who are allergic? How do you handle it? Shots? Medications? Vacuuming the cat? I am already on allegra and nasal steroids for other allergies. Would I need to do more than that? TIA! Best regards.
Response:
I also suffered from severe cat allergies, but no longer. Here is my story: Until recently, I have suffered with extreme respiratory allergies for the last 25 years. Treatments included 2 major sinus operations, almost every know antihistamine/decongestant (including Flonase and Claritin), Oxygen tank, Electrostatic Precipitator air cleaner, chiropractic adjustments, nutritional counseling, homeopathic remedies, and moving to other states (I am now back in NJ). I had pretty much given up hope. Then, in early May (1998), I got a call from one of my customers, a Dr. in Connecticut, who told me to try a product called "Custom Essentials" from Ideal Health. He never indicated it would help my allergies, but he said it might be helpful in improving my overall health and reduce my already-high stress level. Considering his reputation, I did not hesitate in ordering the product, which first requires an in-home urine test, which the company supplies and makes very convenient via FedEx. Results: I was able to eliminate all medications after 2 weeks on the product, I have no sign of any allergies at all, my energy level skyrocketed, I am sleeping much more soundly, and I never felt better in my life. Ideal Health does not make any medical claims on the product, but I can sure attest to its effectiveness in the way of sinus allergies. Many healthcare practitioners (over 10,000) have been using the same testing lab for years (Metametrix), but the cost was very high and test results did not necessarily lead to a definitive nutritional supplement that is "customized" to each individual like Ideal Health has been able to do at a truly affordable price. If I may be of help in informing you further on this method of improving your sinus condition, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mark S. You’ve probably already heard this but………..some breeds of cat do not cause the same reactions as others. Ask a vet or check out cat breeds online. Well, my advice would be to get another type of animal that you aren’t allergic to. I have had cats most my life. Was dx’d as allergic 7 years ago, but refused to get rid of them. I continuously had constant sinus problems, but not enough to knock me down. Then it caught up with me. I’ve had horrible sinusitis since May 1 and no meds are helping. ENT did CT scan and I’m having surgery Wednesday. I had to put my cats outside which was devastating. If I didn’t already have cats, I wouldn’t have gotten any – but I had 3 when told allergic. Can’t imagine trying to bathe my Siamese. The resulting ribbons of flesh where my arms used to be would be worse than the sinusitis
What about wearing a mask around the house – it’s a pity you can’t get some kind of filter that you could just push into each nostril. Edward — Edward A. Etchells

——– You can wear a mask. The Japanese walk around the streets of Tokyo wearing masks to avoid the pollution laden air in that city. Check out the 3M site, which offers dozens of different types. They can be purchased at hospital supply outlets.
Response:
Yes, this is true. My allergist said it needs to be a "hepa" mask though (3M makes one) – one that makes you look sort of like a martian with things on either side. These are needed, because the dander (and other allergens) are so microscopic they can go through most other masks. You know, I’ve actually tried to invent some sort of "nose filter" – just couldn’t think of something that wouldn’t be irritating or show or accidently moved around and hence ineffective. One day – someone like the "Breathe Right" guy is gonna make one and be a millionaire!!
