Allergy Sufferers

Question:

Jon, I have suffered with allergies for years I’ve been on just about every medication, have had sinus surgery to improve the air flow and have been on shots for the last year . . . After a particularly difficult sinus infection about a year ago a new ENT recommended sinus irrigation. It has given me more relief than everything else I’ve tried put together. Even at the worst part of the season I can irrigate with plain old salt water and breath for several hours before I clog up again.  This has been especially helpful with the CPAP – I don’t know how I would have been able to use it some nights otherwise.  I’ve managed to wean my self off of all the other drugs except an occasional shot of Rhinocort. There’s lots of discussion on irrigation at alt.support.sinusitis. There are a couple of doctors sites discussing the benefits that you can find pretty easily (I don’t have them right here or I’d include the URL’s).  There’s also a good write up with information on buying equipment at: http://www-surgery.ucsd.edu/ent/davidson/NASHAND/nasal.htm#NASAL_IRRI… Some people think it’s a little weird, but every  real allergy/sinus sufferer that I know who has tried it has found great relief. I would second this. I use the Grossans Sinus Irrigator with a saline solution in a Water Pik twice a day and it helps greatly. I had nasal surgery a month and a half ago to remove severe nasal polyps and straighten my deviated septum. The sinus irrigator improved my recovery from this operation greatly — I’m guessing but I think two or three days lopped off the recovery time. I used it prior to the surgery and it helped me up to a point. I finally got so congested that nothing would help (except prednisone — but you cannot take this for more than a week or so). This is when I had the surgery, which was quite successful.
