flonase problems?

Question:

Hello to fellow sufferers. I’ve run into a problem and want to learn if anyone else has experienced anything like this…  I went to the dr. on Friday complaining of sore throat, cough, and chest pain.  She said my allergies had run amuck and prescribed Flonase (I already take Claritin on a regular basis.)  Well, I apparently had an allergic reaction to the Flonase!  Cough got worse, I had difficulty eating and breathing, fever went up, etc.  This morning the doc said the Flonase had caused my membranes to swell up and that was causing the added difficulty. Her solution, in addition to antibiotics, was to give me a cortisone injection. Here are my questions: 1.  Anyone else had an adverse reaction to Flonase (or any other steroid inhalant)? 2.  And anyone know why cortisone would cure an allergic reaction to cortisone? Thanks! Is Flonase a steroid?  I didn’t know that and I’ve taken it for a year! Response:

According to my package insert, Flonase is a synthetic glucocorticoid, which means it’s a human-made synthetic steroid.  (Corticoid is the same thing as corticosteroid.) Hope this helps!

You may be allergic to "the other" chemicals in Flonase (microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium, 0.02% W/W benzalkonium chloride, polysorbate 80,and 0.25% W/W phenylethy alcohol).      Nicole stac…@mail.utexas.edu wrote in article <859251316.6…@dejanews.com>… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hello to fellow sufferers. > I’ve run into a problem and want to learn if anyone else has > experienced anything like this…  I went to the dr. on Friday > complaining of sore throat, cough, and chest pain.  She said my > allergies had run amuck and prescribed Flonase (I already take > Claritin on a regular basis.)  Well, I apparently had an allergic > reaction to the Flonase!  Cough got worse, I had difficulty eating > and breathing, fever went up, etc.  This morning the doc said the > Flonase had caused my membranes to swell up and that was causing > the added difficulty. > Her solution, in addition to antibiotics, was to give me a cortisone > injection. > Here are my questions: > 1.  Anyone else had an adverse reaction to Flonase (or any other > steroid inhalant)? > 2.  And anyone know why cortisone would cure an allergic reaction to > cortisone? > Thanks! > Stacey > ——————-==== Posted via Deja News ====———————– >       http://www.dejanews.com/     Search, Read, Post to Usenet

Yes, Flonase is a synthetic, trifluorinated glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory activity.                                 Nicole Julie M.
