Exercise while sick?
Question:
Hello all.. any suggestions for what I can do (if anything) exercise-wise when I am sick? I am talking sinuses, coughing, temperature, draining, flem, not feeling good… I’ve been sick since Thursday night and haven’t worked out since Tuesday. I don’t want to start over at gym but I want to get over being sick quickly! I was going to work out Thursday and Friday, but felt too ucky to want to do more then lie down and be miserable *sniff* *cough*.
i just went through the same thing. i had the flu(still getting over it) the day i ran a high temp nope i didnt do anything. after my temp left i just stuck to some mildly brisk walking just to get some movement in.by no means did i put any real hard effort into it though. some would say dont do anything so your body can use all its energy on getting better which is the most likely best thing to do. load up on V-C. im still battling upper chest congestion as we speak but i get my walk in everyday now. after being sick i usually carry a cough a while after.. just always have. good luck and get well soon!!

You might want to read this article (from the Dolfzine site): http://www.dolfzine.com/page620.htm I came across this when I had the same question when I had a cold and I bookmarked the site. Seems like good advice to me. Take *care* of yourself! HTH, Tonia

Thanks for the post… I guess I’ll just start up a little slower next week and hope that I didn’t lose any of my muscle mass…

msn health just had an article last week about exercising when sick. The gist of the article was. cold – cough – continue with exercise, and some people report feeling better quicker. fever – rest, don’t exercise. So basically, if you are still having a fever, then rest, let your body heal. But if the fever is gone, then do what you can. Don’t over do it, go light. But do *something*. Go for a brisk walk instead of a jog or hard cardio. Hope you feel better soon.

I have pretty bad allergies as well…. I get a good sinus infection several times a year…
— Email me at: perpleglow(AT)comcast.net http://community.webshots.com/user/perpleglow – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I quit smoking quite a few years ago and still get frequent sinusitis. I really believe my sinus problems are more related to allergies than they were to smoking. Sure the smoking aggrevated them but they didn’t go away when I quit. Beverly

That’s when I’d use the recumbent bike and sit with my head back
If genetics are any indication, I got my mom’s sinuses and I’m in for a lifetime of fun and games so I figure I might as well force myself to live with it. With all of the edema (water retention) problems I’ve had over the last few months, it’s nothing for me to work out with some sort of discomfort. I just don’t work out in actual pain (aches are ok). Actually, I was walking on the treadmill when the lymph infection got bad, the right side of my face and head became really swollen and made me dizzy so I went right to the clinic, got my antibiotics, and took 2 days off. I’m none the worse for wear, but I’m also sleeping 9-10 hours a night

When I have a sinus headache, I will usually put an icepack on my head. Some people prefer heat – just depends on what works for you. I have found that as long as I hold that cold pack on my head, I can get up and move around and do stuff. I keep several in the fridge all the time so that I always have one ready. I am always sick from the head up! Seriously, its all in my head and I am congested, my face hurts and feeling crummy and can’t sleep… :( —
I had a really bad week last month. I didn’t even turn on my computer for 3 days. Had to call the ISP and ask them to fix my email since it overloaded. From now on, if I get sick, I will at least turn it on and download even if I don’t turn the monitor on
Seriously, though. If yo don’t feel good enough to move, then rest. I think our bodies tell us what they need. I was so tired, I just slept a lot. If you feel like exercising a little, then maybe do some hand weights. Meghan & the Zoo Crew Equine and Pet Photography http://www.zoocrewphoto.com

I do have a light fever (about 99.8 – 100), and was diagnosed with sinusitis and upper resp infection… I’ll probably take the rest of the weekend off and go back at it next week on Mon or Tues. That will give time for the antibiotics to start working. I’ll just do light cardio so that I don’t wear myself out or get too badly out of shape… Thanks to all that replied! — Email me at: perpleglow(AT)comcast.net http://community.webshots.com/user/perpleglow – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So basically, if you are still having a fever, then rest, let your body heal. Thanks Tonia… I just got back from the doctor and I was diagnosed with sinusitis and an upper respitory infection. They gave me an antibiotic and decongenstant and told me to drink plenty of water and rest… Its the first time I’ve been sick in 3 mos since I quit smoking…

Take it easy and let the body heal. How about just some stretching, etc? If you’re anything like me when I have a sinus infection, it hurts just to blink my eyes and moving is out of the question. I imagine your fellow gym goers will appreciate you staying at home until you’re well <g Get well soon. Beverly

I would just relax and eat like you normally would when your feeling good. Pablo

General rule of thumb is if it’s above the neck….keep exercising perhaps a little less strenuously…below the meck take a rest until you’re better.

Yoga or T’ai Chi. They don’t stress your heart but they’ll keep you flexible and T’ai Chi works your muscles especially in your legs. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all.. any suggestions for what I can do (if anything) exercise-wise when I am sick? Here is the rule I’ve used: Sick from the head up – lay down Sick from the neck down – run around Corny, but I’ve been able to run out the congestion in my lungs on more then one occasion. Feel better.
