Pulsatile irrigation with Alkalol
Question:
While I get regular infections of my sinus, the more frequent problem is congestion which gives me major headache and sinus pain problems. I began following Dr. Grossan’s procedures 8 months ago and as my ENT and I refined my procedures I had increasing success. I’ve found Alkalol to be a major help. I have been using Alkalol full strength in a spray bottle to open my sinus for irrigation when they are closed. I also sometimes use a 50% solution with Breath-Ease in an irrigator bottle that holds 8 oz. for middle of the night or too lazy to set up the waterpik or when traveling and this is quite effective. My cilia action seems to stop or slow down when I don’t use the waterpik technique regularly, however. I’ve been trying it with Alkalol ratios from 10 to 50 % but am unsure if that does any good because it drains fairly quickly and perhaps the Alkalol is largely wasted this way. Is it wise to use any Alkalol in the waterpik with the Breath-Ease or is it just a waste? (With shipping and duty it costs $CDN 7.00 / bottle to use it here, ($US 4.50) but if it is useful I don’t mind.) If it is useful, what percentage of Alkalol should I use in the mix?
Response:
Using Alkolol in a dilute soliution can be soothing to the nose. I don’t know how it affects the action of Breath.ease XL. It is important to use Breathe.ease at an isotonic level and diluting it with other product will affect that concentration. If you are not completely cleared with pulsatile irrigation, please ask your doctor if using proteolytic enzymes – papain, bromelain via buccal pouch would be of help. See www.sinus-relief.com/clearease.html for some references. The action is to thin the mucus and help the cilia function.
