no sense of smell

Question:

I have suffered sinus allergies for as long as I can remember.  I can’t remember ever having a good sense of smell.  (I can’t smell skunk while in a moving car)  Sound familiar to anyone? LS

One of the ways I can tell the difference between an incipient common cold and an incipient sinus infection is that with an incipient sinus infection, my very first symptom is a complete loss of sense of smell (followed very soon after by sinus pain).  OTOH, with a common cold my very first symptom is invariably a sore/scratchy throat–with a cold I don’t start losing my sense of smell until after the sneezing begins (which usually starts a day or two after the sore throat begins). This suggests that the initial site of the common cold virus infection is somewhere other than the sinuses–anyone know exactly where the virus hits first?  The soft palate, maybe? — Steven D. Get checked for polyps.  I have had this condition several times in between my numerous operations for polyps.  Your olfactory sensors are blocked.  Polyps are insideous – see an ENT.  I used to go to allergy doctors, but allergies can’t be cured unless there is a possibility of a clear airway. DL
