What is CYSTIC FIBROSIS?

Question:

It is a systemic condition of exocrine glands.  Mostly effecting the pancreas and mucous producing glands, although sebacceous glands are also effected.  the pathophysiology involves fibrotic cystic lesions in the pancrease which adversely effect digestive enzymes, abnormal sweat from skin, abnormally thick mucus in the lungs ( due to abnormal concentration of the ion chlorine in mucus).  The mucus problem is the big deal it predisposes to respiratory problems such as pneumonia.  The disease seems to be inherited, and effects whites most commonly 1 in 2000 births and occassionally in blacks 1 in 17000 births.  It is rare in orientals.  It is the most serious of inherited diseases in whites.  The CF suffer usually dies in his early 20’s. There are several signs present in the new born which altert the dr that the kid may have CF.  There is some effective consevative care.  Write me and I’ll detail them for you.
