Symptoms and FESS Success Rate
Question:
It appears as if my non-surgical treatment hand may be about played out, and that FESS is in my near future. A British publication called "Pulse" said in Feb. 1997 that the FESS success rate depends on pathology and symptoms. Nasal blockage and anterior nasal discharge are said to "respond best" to FESS, with postnasal discharge, facial pain and headache "often more difficult to treat." Questions for the group: Any idea what’s meant by "often more difficult to treat"? As my most troubling symptoms are airplane-glue like postnasal discharge and facial pressure, is this another reason to exhaust every possible non-surgical treatment? Thanks in advance for the input. According to my ENT, post nasal drip is often not fully relieved by FESS. He admits that PND is, for him, the hardest sinus symptom to cure effectively with surgery. And FESS sure didn’t cure it in my case. > As my most troubling symptoms are airplane-glue like > postnasal discharge and facial pressure, is this another reason to > exhaust every possible non-surgical treatment?
the good news is that I have found that nasal irrigation seems to be more effective now that I have had FESS. I suspect that my sinuses were so blocked that the saline solution simply couldn’t penetrate them. So there is no reason to choose between surgical and non-surgical treatment; for me, the two together have been more effective than either one alone. — Steven D.
