Question:

the isp i use sucks wet butt… trying old dialup h/w and account.. had been using cable modem for like 4 years.. guess it’s time to change. strange, when i saw the headers in the NG using dialup, i realized i was missing a lot of messages (even when the isp was working) anyways, thanks for the info. and thanks to all. wish me luck =). surgery is thursday. they are keeping me overnight to monitor my O2. don’t know the details yet, someone called from the hospital to confirm my visit. they have me scheduled for: functional endoscopic sinus surgery ethmoidectomy (i asked about that.. could be just time allocated ‘if necessary’ – tho i don’t know) spenoidotomy and antrostomy septoplasty turbinate resection i’m wiggin

That ain’t good :o ) > anyways, thanks for the info. and thanks to all.

Did you get the healing info also. I’ll post some in this message. > wish me luck =). surgery is thursday. they are keeping me overnight to > monitor my O2. don’t know the details yet, someone called from the hospital > to confirm my visit. they have me scheduled for: > functional endoscopic sinus surgery > ethmoidectomy (i asked about that.. could be just time allocated ‘if > necessary’ – tho i don’t know)

I’m still hoping they don’t need to mess with your ethmoids. I had to sit there watching the doc crunch out the little honeycombed bones for hours (wasn’t fun) > spenoidotomy and antrostomy

Been they, ain’t real fun either. Good pictures of where they are on http://www.sinusinfocenter.com/sinus_anatomy.html > septoplasty

This will be the surgery requiring nasal packing. They have to shore up the bone and again, ain’t fun, sorry. > turbinate resection

I’m guessing and hoping only inferior turbinate. I had all three whacked on and beside not fun lost a lot of my sense of smell and taste (seems to happen when cutting on middle turbinate mostly so you might be okay). > i’m wiggin

I’d be worried if you weren’t! Some general operative and post operative info: Pre surgery no aspirin products or even herbal stuff. Bleeding can be a big problem with nasal surgery. They may have to cauterize and use silver nitrate sticks to control bleeding (that’s normal, I was awake while doc burnt the tissue and had me blow out the smoke). I kinda wished they had knocked me out but he wanted me sitting up and awake because it’s safer. If they knock you out, you should wake up in a recovery room. Your nose will be stuffy and maybe achy. You may have a dressing under your nose to collect the bloody drip that is normal for the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Mine bleed at home until I had to put some tissue up my nose (don’t you do this, I’m nuts :o ). With nasal packing you may not have the dripping problem as bad. Some bleeding is normal but it shouldn’t be a flood (call doc if that happens). You should be sent home with prescriptions for pain medication (make them, this surgery can hurt) and an antibiotic pill, possibly also steroid pills. It is extremely important to take the antibiotic pill as prescribed, infection ya know! If possible, you should keep your nose moist with a salt-water nasal spray (Ocean, Salinex, Ayr, etc.). After packing is removed nasal irrigation works wonders to get the gunk out. Your first follow-up could be in a few days or maybe one week following surgery at which time cleaning of your nose will be performed (hopefully under local anesthesia spray), a procedure that should be repeated weekly for the first 4-6 weeks following surgery. They call removing the scar tissue "debridement" and is SUPER important otherwise the tissue will harden and could block nasal flow. For the first couple of post-operative visits, I would take some pain medication prior to your arrival and have a driver with you. Tough to drive when your nose is slowly dripping blood. Also, you may experience some bad headache but hopefully not. Sometimes at your first follow-up visit, steroid sprays will be restarted (Rhinocort, Nasocort, etc.). Remember no Afrin! Antibiotics may be continued until the cavity is healed, usually about 3-4 weeks. Similarly, if steroid pills are prescribed, these will usually be slowly discontinued over three to four weeks. Kim, didn’t want to scare you just let you know what’s coming. At the end of all this healing, you will breath like you never knew was possible (I hope :o ) Email me or post if you need more info. And remember, you will be my friend even if you decide not to have surgery :o ) :o ) Mike
