Fungal Vs Bacterial Infections
Question:
After several years of battling a sinus infection, going through many rounds of antibiotics, surgery, nasal irrigation, natural cures… I recently had an appointment with an Infectious Disease doctor. She has done cultures and says I still have a bacterial infection, which she says she sometimes treats with intravenous antibiotics. She says that we often also develop fungal infections so sent me for more cultures to test for this. When I asked my ENT doctor about this, he said that some people get fungal infections in their sinuses due to extended use of antibiotics. This is all interesting for no one has ever tested for any type infection before–it has always been to prescribe more antibiotics. From what I’ve read here and elsewhere, I suppose it is normal to continue to have bacterial infections after surgery. Can you comment on how prevalent fungal infections might be and how they are treated? Is there any way for a patient to determine the difference between bacterial and fungal infections? Thanks, Wayne

Wayne, I’m about to request testing for a fungal infection as well. For more information check out www.sinuses.com – read the whole thing, and then go to the physicians’ section, which is a little technical, but offers a lot of information about fungal infections and treatment.
