Thanks so much for the reply. I will follow up with my current Dr. All i am doing is irrigation. it is probably more pronounced when i fill my sinuses and hold my nose and bend over–i seem to be able to clear more stuff out this way, i was assuming i was cleansing my ethmoid — kinda like the upside-down irrigating method that has been mentioned. I don’t know if i would ever be able to get this mucous out without irrigating. Perhaps the latest CT scan that i had done will show some abnormality with the the valve.

It is very dangerous to have nasal material come out of the system that drains the eye called the naso – lacrimal duct. Whatever you are doing that causes it – stop at once. The nose is filled with bacteria , the bad kind, and you definitely don’t want that going into your eye system. The naso-lacrimal duct system is not equipped to handle the bugs that the nose has. You are born with a one way valve that drains the eye and prevents pus from the nose going into the eye. For whatever reason it sounds like your valve is not working. Again, getting material for whatever reason into your eye from the nose can result in serious disease.

Of course there is–in the reverse direction. The tear ducts drain down into the nose. So if your nasal irrigation fluid temporarily blocks the tear duct opening and keeps it from draining, your eyes can start watering because there’s no place for the eye fluid to go. The manufacturer of Sinus Rinse has listed "watery eyes" as a possible side effect of irrigation with their squeeze syringe. > is this a cause for concern? or might it be yet another symptom of > previous too-aggressive surgery?

A badly and chronically blocked tear duct often indicates infection. I wouldn’t worry about it unless the tear duct becomes blocked even when you’re not irrigating. In that case you need to see a physician. In the meantime, you might try rubbing or massaging the area near the inner corner of your eye, or applying warm compresses to the area, to see if you can open up that tear duct. WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST! — Steven D. Went, in the car, to the store >> and upon arriving home I came indoors and thought my nose was running, >> grabbed a kleenex and discovered blood. >> Should I be concerned? Or is this something that others have a problem >> with as well? > Heated air in the winter can be very drying. My hands are so dry the skin > cracks and starts bleeding. And I can feel the dryness inside my nasal > passages. > Try using a plain saline nasal spray to keep your nasal passages moist. > Nasal irrigation works even better. > — > Steven D.
I am rinsing with Hydra Sense, once daily at night. It does help to clear the mucous. I’m just wondering if something other than Vaseline can be applied to keep the nasal passages moist. And, should I cover my nose when outdoors in the cold? Never had a problem before last winter, when I developed a serious sinus infection that caused nasal sores & plenty of bleeding. This scared the heck out of me, so now I panic at the site of any blood. You may recall my previous posts regarding the forced evacuation of our home due to a neighbour’s burning of treated & other assorted woods, having specialists living in the house for 3 days doing air-quality testing (finding arsenic, chromium, copper) and having to get a court injunction to get him stopped. If you’re interested, the quickie site I put together is at: http://shirleybrandie.ca/photos/ We had to completely disinfect our home, replace the furnace, ductwork, AC, rip out all carpeting, toss out mattresses & pillows…the house was gutted to the bare bones, and restored to the tune of about $60,000 Can. (Repairs & lawyer fees, so far) Court date for pre-trial is next Sept, and final court date is March of 2007. So, needless to say, aside from being in the poor house, my nose has seen better days. I know this is a long post, but I just don’t want you all to think I am worrying about nothing, and hope you will understand my fear.

Once a night isn’t enough to keep your nasal passages moist. I do it several times a day. Try increasing the frequency of the nasal rinsing. Also you might try a daily zinc supplement to promote healing. Of course, if the bleeding is profuse and chronic, you should see a physician. > And, should I cover my nose when outdoors in the cold? > Never had a problem before last winter, when I developed a serious sinus > infection that caused nasal sores & plenty of bleeding.
I don’t recall if you said you were using steroid nasal sprays. But those can slow healing of trauma to the nasal mucosa; nosebleeds are a frequent side effect. — Steven D.
Nosebleed in winter is due to the extreme dryness plus the vasoconstriction caused by the cold. The answer is moisturizing nasal gel.and moisture in your bedroom.

Thanks, Dr. Grossan, I guess after the bad infection with bleeding that I had last winter, I am panicked. So, I can assume that this is a normal, so to speak, occurrence? I worry as the bleeding (minor) happened again this morning and I hadn’t even stuck my nose out the door.

Thanks, Steven, I’ll try doing the irrigation more often. My ENT prescribed Nasonex, but I find it stings and I am afraid of causing bleeding. I had some pretty deep nasal ulcers last winter along with the dried and bleeding sores in my nose that seemed, to me, to be caused by my very own nasal secretions…kind of bizarre, but I do think that’s what it was. I wonder why, along with x-rays that they don’t do a swab to see what exactly is causing the problem?

Dry indoor air, as has been said. I know you said you humidify your home, but humidity levels will still vary through the house…….. Also if you use a lot of Kleenex, that will irritate the nose.

If you have nasal bleeding, cortisone sprays do tend to thin the nasal memebranes and promote bleeding. Best is a nasal get or ointment moisturizer. And drink liquids. Breathe.ease nasal gel has the advantage of moisturizing at the cellular level plus the applicator is intra-nasal so there is no waste.

Litvintchouk >>Email: sdlit…@earthlinkNOSPAM.net >>Remove the NOSPAM before replying to me. > Thanks, Steven, > I’ll try doing the irrigation more often. > My ENT prescribed Nasonex, but I find it stings and I am afraid of causing > bleeding.

If you already are prone to nosebleeds, steroid nasal sprays can retard healing and prolong the bleeding. You should contact your physician and let him know what is going on. He may reduce the dose of Nasonex or maybe stop it long enough to allow your nosebleeds to heal. — Steven D. And drink liquids. > Breathe.ease nasal gel has the advantage of moisturizing at the cellular > level plus the applicator is intra-nasal so there is no waste.

Thanks, Dr. Grossan, Can you tell me where I can buy the Breathe.ease nasal gel in Canada? I’d like to give that a try.

Do many people have a problem with minor nasal bleeding when exposed to cold air? Temp here was 24F this morning. Went, in the car, to the store and upon arriving home I came indoors and thought my nose was running, grabbed a kleenex and discovered blood. Should I be concerned? Or is this something that others have a problem with as well? How do I handle this? I don’t want to stay indoors all winter! Thanks for any advice you can give me. — Shirley

Actually it’s the dryness indoors that causes the problem. It just shows up when you restore humidity by going out…..

Humidity is fine indoors. Actually just installed a humidifier onto the furnace…to save all the filling of the 2 portable ones I had previously. To me, it appears that I have a lot of veins that are very close to the surface, and some look like they’ll rupture. I am seeing a dermatologist on Friday & hope that he can help somehow. The ENT that I saw prescribed Nasonex for allergy problems that I seem to have year round. I’m not using the Nasonex as I fear it will only cause more bleeding.

I suffer from frequent sinus infections. Like many here I have tried many methods to help when I have a sinus infection. When I have a sinus infection I can feel and actually hear the mucous moving around in my sinuses. When I was a young boy I remember my grandmother having sinus problems and she went to a general practitioner is a small, rural south Georgia town. The doctor would hook up some kind of vacuum to her nose and actually suck the mucus out of her sinuses. It does sound very gross but I am at the point to where I am willing to try anything to help empty my sinuses when the mucus starts to build up. I think if I could build some kind of attachment that would fit inside of one nostril to a small variable power vacuum, perhaps I could suck some of the mucus out of my sinuses. Any thoughts, suggestions or questions. I appreciate any help. poston8 [@] comcast.net

I can confirm that I went to an elderly ENT a long time ago that had the same kind of machine. It worked kind of like the Grossan irrigator in reverse. Had a tank of ’solution’ on the machine, that I presumed put some kind of ‘medicine’ in the nose also, or was just there for the suction to work. This doctor used to also pack the nose with a long, long string and it was soaked in a thick solution and then you set under a heat lamp and then left the string packing in for several hours and then he would remove it. Can’t really remember if it worked or not, but I don’t remember going back. I would doubt they still use those machines, but they do kind of make sense. …Allen

ENT’s have these vacuum devices but I don’t think there are any home versions. Many people use nasal irrigation with a salt water solution to clear mucuos from their sinuses. Twice daily irrigation has saved me from so many sinus problems so I can attest that it really does work! Some people prefer a neti pot or there are nasal adapters to fit a water pik or there is a special purpose device called the Grossan pulsatile nasal Irrigator. I use a neti pot when I travel and use the grossan irrigator at home. See the FAQ of this forum or this link for more info on nasal irrigation: http://www.ent-consult.com/faq.html#irrigation

Greetings. This is my first post to this group, which I’ve been perusing for a while. My right nostril is badly blocked; I can sometimes breathe in through that nostril, but can’t easily breathe out. Blowing nose with that nostril is very hard, and makes ears pop. Have been taking antibiotics for 15 days, with very slight improvement. Same phenomenon with nasal irrigation: saline flows in right nostril and very easily out to left, but only with difficulty from left to right nostril; blowing nose through right nostril hurts ears. Other symptoms are covered by many helpful posts in this group. Would this particular one be typical of a hypertrophied right nasal turbinate ? Best wishes John

John, I get the same thing. Especially in the morning. I take Aleve and it takes the swelling down and the blockage starts to drain. I find the Aleve is good for my sinus headaches too. Sometimes the pressure gets so bad I do not know what to do. This winter I am having a lot of problems with my sinus, I use the saline rinse at night and morning but have to be carefull or it goes into my ears. shirley

It can be caused by a lot of things. In my case, infected ethmoid sinuses which worsened the effect of an already deviated septum. The only way to know what’s really going on is for you to have a sinus CT scan and a nasal endoscopy. — Steven D.
Absolutely. I think you are exactly correct. Of course, the swelling may be due to allergies etc as well as anatomy.

Yesterday marked the end of my round of antibiotics, day 10. Today, I experienced the same color of ‘mucus production’ in my left sinus, yellow-opaque in color. Upon reading the posts in here, I’m realizing that this THING may be indeed chronic w/o any end in sight. However, my energy level HAD (past tense?) improved, SOME taste came back, if ever intermittent. Conclusion? Not much hope for any recovery except for the nasal irrigation. Yesterday found me getting a brand new box of bicarb soda, salt minus iodine, and h. peroxide. I made a batch of the dry goods in a hard plastic container, washed it well with water and bleach, dried it with a paper towel. I had been using my ‘old’ b. soda,’old’ in the shelf god knows how old, peroxide, figuring (?) if it kills bacteria it may not have a shelf life. Frustrated and overwhelmed with other problems, took the least lines of resistance in that area previously. Against the nurs. prac’s advice, I opted to use perioxide only, minimally about a half a teaspoon’s worth per 4 oz, and gave myself 2 doses of this amt. in the handy bottle I figured would work just fine. No regrets on the minimal dose I self prescribed via h. peroxide. No severe burning, just a whoah, sorta feeling and a need to put a cold washcloth on my external nose to have a bit of cooling effect, but other than about a minute of that, I was fine. Now, since the infection is on the left maxillary side, I pose this question… my stategy is one of, bending over the bathroom sink, face down, most always, or to the ’side’ never exacting a method til I read of another’s dilemma over how to drain the left maxillery side, if at all possible, so that got me thinking and perhaps DR. Grossan can advise? I started after the initial flow of the bottle was done, then turned my head to the RIGHT, thinking it would then flow to the LEFT somehow irrigated the maxillary area, I hope to God, and HELP this annoying misery in some geographic way. During this miserable mundane ordeal, I wondered, is there such a thing too, as aspiration of infection in a delicate manner, that would END this, over the invasiveness of surgery, dispite laproscopic technic? Given the things we have now, visually and so much that would visualize surgery to a factor of eliminating the INFECTION and drain it minus cutting and recovery as it all seems so simple in my theory of thought, over any cuttage of tissue on / in the face. My dread, is that once the antibiotics now consumed are worn "off" that this thing will return in the same misery that it originated with. However, I plan to irrigate well, about 3 x’s daily, and keep on top of it as best I can, and hope that I do not have to go return for a cat scan of my sinus area.. or have a test to determine the strain of infection that plagues me. It does feel ’still there’ I can tell. Taste is still obliterated; smell is nil,or maybe about oh… 15% or so, tops. So thats telling. I’d give anything, to ’smell the roses’ in more than one. To be denied such a simple joy, we had (yeah had..) taken for granted is surely something I won’t believe I ‘d do again. Dara

..I think amoxicillin is just prescribed to satisfy those people who go to the Dr., and aren’t happy unless they leave with a prescription. ..It worked fine 25 years ago, but now for sinusitis, it appears to be as ’bout as powerful as a placebo. …I would suggest a prescription of levaquin — 3 weeks minimum. …Jon

I took it for a few months after surgery but at quite low levels in the 10 mg. of less range. If you do take it for a long time, try to do it at the lowest dose possible. If you are still smoking though, I would not take it until you have given up smoking completely. Also, get all the hose thotoughly cleaned of old dust and smoke and mold and consider moving if you cannot do so.

Hello, To date +ten years using Prednisone 20Mg per day. The only medication to relieve my nasal and sinus inflammation. Started with 40Mg and lowered dosage to minimun needed. Same time period gained 40 lbs. Several doctors have tried different medications, some had zero positive effect others had some good effect but the side effects, increase iop by 10 to 15 points, even when using several different eye drops to lower pressure. My suggestion if planning to use Prednisone long term. A blood and urine work up once a year, check eye pressure and field vision at least once a year and when prescriptions are changed and/or added have a eye pressure test about a week after the change in medication. I suppose it is a matter of the individual in terms of side effects either minor or serious. Take Care. beamish.

Hey iJah! Been gone for medical for a few days and finally got around to reading posts. Glad you are feeling better and most of all, getting some restorative sleep! You know what my response is going to be of course. I have been on/off prednisone for 23 years now, as high as 60mg. and low as 5mg. As of Monday I am taking it indefinately on an every other day basis…10mg. Here are some suggestions to add to beamish’s post. Get a bone density done yearly, take calcium/vitamin D (remember I told you about the chews?), get your eyes checked yearly, try to get to an every other day routine as this gives your adrenals a break, don’t depend solely on the prednisone ie: eat only whole foods with no preservatives, additives, colors, etc., walk daily, use gentle nasal irrigation with a saline solution, and get a good nights sleep! Keep posting as to how you are doing. Trudy.

I would not trust the allergy tests toe detect all sensitivities. Probably you are sensitive (if not technically allergic) to the usual culprit: household dust (and maybe mold if it is dampish there). He reported I have a slightly deviated septum on the left >side but he didn’t feel it warranted any action. He suggested there >was nothing further he could do for me. >I also had some general allergy tests that showed no obvious >allergies. >This is generally a autumn/winter problem for me. >I realise there are many on here with worse symptoms than myself but >nonetheless I am feeling frustrated and depressed by my ongoing cycle >of symptoms and fatigue resulting in days off work and impositions on >other aspects of my lifetstyle. >Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Hello, You have told us Doc gave you both a CT scan and an MRI, however you havenot told us what he did for you in the manner of TREATMENT . . . Question: Why did he order both a CT scan and an MRI? Which did he order first; the CT scan or the MRI? You have an infection in your Maxillary with middle ear involvement. How come you donot go to your family Doc and ask him to send you to some one? Take your medical records from the first jerk . . . Your family Doc may even treat you for the sinus infection and even cure you . . . Get culture for fungus at family Doc. Tell Doc to check for fungus; make that important. Do you have nasal polyps? Ask family Doc if you have nasal polyps . . . You are too nice a person to be hurting like this – do something . . . !!!!! I bet your infection is Staph or Strep. Ask for culture for bacterial infection too (Staph/Strep). + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/benjamin.htm MustRead! http://WWW.PAMINIFARM.COM "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" Hosea 4:6 ___________________________________________________________________________ ____ Posted Via Uncensored-News.Com – Accounts Starting At $6.95 – http://www.uncensored-news.com <><><><><><><> The Worlds Uncensored News Source <><><><><><><><>

I have had recurrent sinus problems for years, including infections and a couple of operations that removed plenty of polips. Over the last year, year and a half, however, everything was going quite well. Daily nasal irrigation, nothing else, was enough to keep me symptoms free. This August, while snorkelling and diving down a few meters, I noticed the air preassure in my left nostril near the eye building up and then being released like with a tire puncture. Probably there was some mucus thas was blocking the air. A few days later all my problems started. I began to produce yellow liquid from my left nostril. Then, I started to feel cold around my chest even though is what hot outside. The mucus was greenish/yellowish and more abundant. I knew it was the beginning of an infection but I kept hopeful that more frequent nasal irrigation might clear it. In the end, one day, after a work out at the gym I sput some mucus and blood. Four days later, since it had not stopped I went to my ENT specialist. He noticed something wrong with my lung, put me on Ciprofloxacin immediately and ordered a chest X-ray. The X-ray confirmed a lung infection. Probably, my sinus infection had gone down to my chest. After two weeks of Cipro the blood had completely cleared but the nose was feeling not ok yet. Plenty of mucus but clear. A week after the Cipro I starting producing green sticky mucus from my nose. I was still feeling cold inside my chest but no blood. Two days ago, I started a one week course of Cefuroxime antibiotic and the cold chest is gone and my nose feels better. It looks like this antibiotic is doing the business better. I still produce lumps of thick, sticky and transparent mucus coming from my left sinuses. I am certainly aware of the dangers of oversusing antibiotics. But nasal irrigation is not good enough when the mucus is trapped inside. I think that if I could make the mucus lining my sinuses more liquid it would be easier for it to be drained and perhaps my problems would improve. So, is it possible to liquefy the sinus mucus? Thanks, Antonio

The reason it is think is inflammation or infection or blockage. Only identifying and fixing that cause will be a true solution. Now, you can use guaifnesen or use irrigation too…..

I’ve tried a number of different fluids (in a cup) that are usually mentioned here as sinus rinses and nothing actually dissolves mucus as far as I can tell. At least nothing that you would use a sinus rinse.
