When blocked sinuses were especially a problem for several months during one year, I resorted to acupunture treatments as recommended by another person who had benefited and I must say that this worked very well for me and I am a moderate smoker myself.  So I recommend acupunture if your problem is bothering you very badly and you’ve tried the steam etc. All the best.

Agree with David Fletcher; but there is a nasal steamer on the market that is really great as well as an attachment for the Water-Pik that you can use to irrigate the sinuses with a warm saline solution. Suggest you also try fresh horseradish grated in tomato or clamato juice.  If you use enough it will REALLY open them up!

Paul, what about spearmint tea? is the effect the same? — Pam Kung Applied Physics Stanford University

Dairy products really do cause mucus to form.  Try a week without it. Another nasal irrigation is weak Hydrogen peroxide.  Start with 3% and dilute that 30 or 100 parts water to 1 part of 3%.  This is a disinfectant that works on both bacteria and viruses. You might consider a fast.  Your body is trying to get rid of something. Good luck.

Hello Neil,         Do you know the actual reason for the sinus  blockage?  Better to address that, than to fool around  with the symptom.  Allergies, perhaps?  If that’s the case  you might want to look into injection therapy.  I know that  you asked about a "natural" approach, but to tell the truth,  the introduction of tiny amounts of allergins in order to build  the body’s resistance to them sounds like Homeopathy to me. Neil, Of course, the first thing to do is to give up smoking, all those particles are tough on sinuses and lungs. Then, you can inhale steam three times a day, a towel draped over the head helps contain the steam.  The idea here is not to get burned, so water gently simmering is enough.
