Starting low-carb diet now, advice needed

Question:

Well, you folks have convinced me…. I am now starting my low-carb diet.  I just finished reading Protein Power by Eades, but there are still alot of questions.  My main concern is how accurate I will be in counting carb and protein grams.  This whole diet (lifestyle change) is new to me.  I’m also not used to eating 3 times a day, plus snacks.  My max is usually lunch and dinner.  I will keep you posted on my progress… here are my starting stats. I’m a 25 year old female, 155lbs, waist is 30 inches.  Actually, that’s not bad for my build, and I must hide it well… I have put on 25 pounds in the last 3 years, and most people guess that I’ve increased by no more than 10 pounds. Another reason I am anxious to start this new way of life is for the increase in energy… currently, I am always tired (need a nap now!) If anyone out there who has been living this way happily for a while and has had weight loss and energy increase would be willing to correspond with me and answer anyquestions I have as I go along, please e-mail me… I need ALL the help I can get! Julie

: Well, you folks have convinced me…. I am now starting my low-carb diet.  I Welcome on board, Julie! We’re in a very similar situation! I’m 28, about 5′7", and I’m about 155, too. In the seven years I was vegetarian, I put about 25 lbs. Ugh! I was sluggish, flabby, and unhappy (unfortunately, I did _love_ the food–aaah). I started with the Heller’s Carbohydrate Addict Diet, partly ‘cos my mom is on it and partly ‘cos it looked like it involved the least amount of math. =) I did a little foray into Atkin’s a couple of weeks ago, but apparently I’m not disciplined enough. Oops. So now I’m back on CAD and am pretty happy with the results. : If anyone out there who has been living this way happily for a while and has : had weight loss and energy increase would be willing to correspond with me I’ve been on a low-carb diet for about 9 months, although the last three months are so have been really hard for me. This past week, I really buckled down and wow! can I tell the difference this morning! Pulled out some of my spring clothes and that wrap-around skirt fits again! I didn’t have problems getting out of bed this weekend (in fact, I was up at 6 a.m. on Saturday and took a long walk), and I managed to endure 2 hrs of Easter Egg hunt frenzy with 6 kids on Sunday w/o needing a nap later. _That’s_ the best referral I can think of for low-carb life. =) Everyone on the group here is great (I’ve only been reading since Feb.), and is more than happy to share ideas and advice. Unless you’re not comfortable with being a regular poster, I’d encourage you to ask your questions to the group, instead of doing it through personal email. First, you’ll get more advice (what works for some doesn’t work for others, and nobody knows everything), plus, we can all benefit from your questions and answers! Also, checkout the lowcarb site at www.lowcarb.org. It’s a great place to start. Good luck and it’s good to meet you! — Lydia Ash                         /       I don’t want the world. http://falcon.cc.ukans.edu/~ash /

First, Lydia, congrats on the clothes fitting again!  I know that feeling, and it is a wonderful feeling.  Oh, accomplishment. Secondly, what does "really buckled down" mean?  I’d be interested to know what changes you effected in your diet. Lee S.

: First, Lydia, congrats on the clothes fitting again!  I know that feeling, : and it is a wonderful feeling.  Oh, accomplishment. Thanks! It’s kinda funny when a gal thinks "Oh, great! I _don’t_ have to buy new clothes this spring!" =) : Secondly, what does "really buckled down" mean?  I’d be interested to know : what changes you effected in your diet. Heh. I love my summer clothes! And I’m _really_ into retro-wear, so the vast majority of my wardrobe is 1950’s shirtwaist dresses. Very fitted bodices and not much forgiveness in the armholes. Also, with spring comes bellydance performances. Do the math on _that_ one! I also have been having some health problems. Nothing debilitating, just exhaustion, sore throats, headaches, chronic sinusitis. Things that kept me from going on walks, going out dancing, anything that got me up and out of the house. I decided I didn’t want to spend this summer like that, so I kept pestering my doc until she finally sent me to a specialist, ran tests, the whole shebang. I’m on the right medication now, and what with eating right again, I feel like I can take on anything! And that only took a week and a half! I didn’t really change my diet, I went back on it. I’d been carb-binging (we’re talking pancakes for breakfast, bagel for lunch and cheese fries for dinner) since, oh, JANUARY (ack!) and I knew it had to stop _now_ or it was all over. And, really, it only took a week! And I’d been sick for two months! Can I say this newsgroup is what really turned me around? Thanks you all! You’re great! — Lydia Ash                         /       I don’t want the world. http://falcon.cc.ukans.edu/~ash /
