Sodium Chloride (OCEAN)

Question:

I am using this product now (Ocean nasal spray). Is this good for Chronic Sinusitis? Is Sodium Chloride safe for this? When my sinuses act up there is a dull pressure pain behind my right eye. My sinuses hardly ever act up, maybe every 3 to 5 days and the pain is nothing like it was the first two weeks of development. When it does act up though, I have dull pressure, light pressure pain and I can smell a nasty smell is my nose. I have heard of horror surgery stories, one inpeticular being the removal of the top of a skull to get behind the eye to repair damage. Does anyone think I am a candidate for this kind of surgery? I am 22 and have never had sinus problems before. Justin Lovell <justin.lov…@bigfoot.com>

It’s certainly safe but saline nasal spray is not as effective as saline nasal irrigation.  (Which is just as well, they charge a lot of money for an ounce of salt water.)  There are a variety of methods available for doing nasal irrigation, all relatively safe.  Check out http://www.njc.org/MFhtml/NSW_MF.html > I have heard of horror surgery stories, one inpeticular being the removal of > the top of a skull to get behind the eye to repair damage. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) has largely replaced the more extensive surgical procedures.  With FESS, the surgeon goes in thru the nostrils, and uses an endoscope to locate the sinus trouble.  Only a competent ear-nose-throat specialist can decide whether you are a candidate for surgery. Generally they like to exhaust all other possibilities first. > I am 22 and have never had sinus > problems before.

I hate to tell you this, but you may have to get used to it from now on….  :-( Good luck. — Steven D. Litvintchouk Email:  s…@mitre.org Disclaimer:  As far as I am aware, the opinions expressed herein are not those of my employer.

Save the bottle when you use up the Ocean.  Then you can mix your own sterile saline solution and keep using it as needed, which will probably be less and less if you follow the advise about irrigation.
