Sinusitis and Sore Throat Pain Question
Question:
I have had chronic sinusitis for 20 years and used various antibiotics and MOA type nose sprays. I have basically learned to live with it. But in the last 2 months, whenever my sinuses act up, my throat really hurts in the back near the tonsils. It even hurts to move my tongue. It feels like the muscles in my throat are sore when I swallow or talk. The first time I had this my strep test was negative but 3 weeks of antibiotics finally cleared up the throat pain. My question is why after 20+ years am I suddenly getting sore throats when I have a sinus infection? I gave up smoking in Sept of last year and my sinuses have been worse. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks for any and all comments.

I can’t tell you WHY your throat hurts at this time and not before. My allergist said that the drip from the sinuses to the throat is very irritating to the delicate tissues.

I have the same problem, but only during the spring, and sometimes part of the winter. The explanation is not known. I have no known allergies, but I always have post nasal drip due to my chronic sinusitis. My throat pain began two years ago, it usually begin in March and lasts thru the spring. The pain is sometimes severe at night, and I wake up from the pain. I sometimes have to take ibuprofen or tylenol at night (around 2 am) because of the pain. Since the pain is worse at night, the doctors can’t really check me in the day and see the cause. Basically it feels like the throat closes and I can’t swallow from the pain. When I wake up, the pain is usually gone. Usually when I have this throat pain is when my sinuses seem to be doing best, which is hard to explain too. My explanation is that there is something during this time of the year in the air that causes irritation, not an allergic reaction, which in turn creates the pain. Anyways, you are not alone. Taking something warm, or gargling with warm salt water or water with hydrogen peroxide helps. Also, chewing on one of those throat lozenges sometimes calms the pain at night. It is possible you have developed a chronic infection in the adenoid region – behind the nose and above the throat. Have this checked and if adenoids are the problem, ask your doctor about using papaya and pulsatile irrigation as described at http://www.ent-consult.com Murray Grossan, M.D.
