sinus infection or allergy

Question:

Nightly when I am home, I tend to get congested.  I live in a Basement Garden apartment and it tends to be a bit dry in here.  I do have a humidifier going on all the time.  Because I feel like this during the evening , I have a hard time sleeping or getting to sleep or I wake up in the middle of the night.  I feel nervousness becuase of the unability of not being to breathe correctly.  I am also about 217pounds and should weigh around 180 or so.  Once I leave my house, I tend to get decongested rather quickly.  I guess I’m wondering, is my basement sick (mold, mildew, etc) or can it be a sinus infection?

Basements tend to be moldy.  I would try discontinuing the humidifier (humidity promotes mold). Bettter yet, move out of the basement somewhere else. Congestion is not sinusitis … yet.  Don’t let it develop into it.    I developed chronic sinusitis while living in a basement.

I agree with Don, but, assuming you have personal or financial reasons for staying in the apartment, you might try a thorough cleaning of the basement as well as drying it out.  Have you been tested for allergies ?  Often, people are allergic to dust mites rather than mold, *but* the mites feed on mold so they often go together.  There are various sites with good info on mite-proofing your sleeping environment (www.allergybuyersclub.com for one).

Basements as a rule have mold. Check to see if the garden is watered so that the water accumulates near you. Stop the humidifier. If you feel dry you can use a nasal moisturizer – without benzalkonium – or make the spray yourself. Taping up the tip of your nose at night may help too.
