Sinus dilemma
Question:
Greetings all, I am 22 and have had problems with my sinuses most of my life. I’ve recently moved to the U.K. from South Africa and my sinus problems have moved with me. I often experience a pressure and occasional pain in my sinus area but the for the past three or four months my glands under my chin are always swollen and painful. I have been to the local GP who had x-rays done and established only a presence of a thick mucous in my sinus area. She had no solutions and only referred me to a ENT specialist for a appointment in a few months. This problem seems to be affecting me both mentally and physically and I don’t quite know what to do next. I have also been told as a result of allergy tests that I am extremely allergic to dust mite. Could this be a contributing factor? Why should I have swollen glands if there is no evidence of infection? Any help/pointers would be very appreciated Regards, Jason Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Hi Jason, I think allergies is a different problem from sinusitis, but can contribute. For some of us, if the sinuses stay blocked up, infection starts and gets into the mucous linings. This kills the cilia that push the mucous out and things get more blocked up. It’s hard to say how far along you are, but the ENT doctor should be able to tell via CT scans. I would advise you get second opinions if possible. If you have an infection, antibiotics might help because you are so young. Once it becomes chronic you might need sinus surgery to open things up. Sometimes the problem is due to a "diviated septum." This is the cartilage down the center of the nasal passages. If this is too crooked in blocks the sinuses. Sinus infections do make us feel poorly and sometimes confused and irritable. These are all common symptoms. Good luck, Wayne

There are measures you can take to help the dust mite allergy. I don’t know if these products are available in the UK. You need to put special covers on your mattress and pillows. Dust mites thrive when the humidity is over 50%, so you need to sleep with either an air conditioner, hepa filter or dehumidifier. Take up the carpeting if you can. If not there are chemicals used to treat the carpets which kill the mites. Also no fabric furniture or stuffed animals in the room. All the above can be purchased from www.allergycontrol.com I have no interest in the company, I just happened to get the catalog from my allergist and bought my stuff from them. I am very happy with their products. Nadine

I always get swollen glad in my neck when I have a sinus infection. Swollen glands mean your body is fighting something. Maybe a low grade sinus infection. Read www.sinuses.com. Do everything he mentions that you can NOW. The longer you wait the more likely the problem will get worse. Allergies can aggravate a sinus infection, but it sounds like you need treatment for your sinuses too. I also get very fatigued, feverish, grumpy and achy all over. That’s not allergies, that is sinuses. Carol – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -jason_batche…@my-deja.com wrote: > Greetings all, > I am 22 and have had problems with my sinuses most of my life. All I can say about this subject is that it only takes one glass of milk to get my sinus’s in a uproar. Carol, Ditto on the fatigue. I had a top-rated ENT at a big-city medical school tell me that fatigue is not a symptom of sinus infections. I should have known right then to find a different doctor! It is my main symptom (next to the colored mucos and bad smell). I also have bad seasonal allergies, and do not experience the fatigue with allergies at all. Its definately an infection-related thing.
