Preventative
Question:
What can one do to prevent this write-off of March and April each year. Sinusitus lays me low each year and I end up going to the doctor for medication that is sometimes worse than the problem. IE claritin c total disorientation. Is there an over the counter medication that one can take to avoid the pollen problem? Roger

I use a saline solution to keep from getting sinus diseases. You don’t want to use just a spray, you want to flush out the sinuses daily with about 8 to 12 ounces. Mix the saline yourself with 1 gallon of distilled water, table salt and baking powder. Use 1TBLSP and 1 tsp. of salt, and equivelent of baking powder. Use an asperator (bulb like device used for clearing baby’s noses) to infuse it into your sinuses once a day if you have no symptoms, and as needed with sinus disease. Tip your head over the sink and and plug one nostril with your finger or thumb, and gently squeeze the bulb into the other nostril. Let the solution run into your sinuses and down your throat (Don’t swallow it, let it run out of your mouth.) Alternate betweenthe two nostils. That should keep you clear through the summer months. This method has worked wonders for me. I have been diagnosed with Chronic Sinusitis, and have had multiple surgeries with long courses of antibiotics. Nothing ever worked untill a doctor recomended doing this procedure. For the past several years I have not had more then 2 weeks symptom free untill now. I have been symptom free for over 6 months. I "dushe" my sinuses once a day, every day. I hope this works as well for you. Roger >> Roger, Try Nasalcrom nasal spray, it is cromlyn sodium and a preventative, and very low on the side effects. Just came over the counter a couple of months ago, and is used for allergic rhinitis/sinusitis. It is not a decongestant or antihistimine and shouldn’t act that way. I’m no doctor, except my own, Sue M.

I too have chronic sinusitis. I have been doing daily nasal irrigation (several times a day, in fact), using both the squeezw-bulb method and the Grossan nasal irrigator method. This definitely relieves my symptoms, but it has neither prevented sinus infections nor hastened my recovery from them when I do get them. It may be that it was the combination of surgery followed by nasal irrigation that did the trick for you. I haven’t had any surgery yet. — Steven D. Roger, If you are in the States, Nasalcromspray can now be bought w/o a presc. It reduces the allergic reaction well without the drying of antihistamines. Also, 50 mg. zinc tablets after every meal helps my sinus prob.

There are a lot of things that can be done for seasonal symptoms. Sounds like you are becoming exhausted, with exhaustion of your natural defense system. Some suggestions at http://www.ent-consult.com under "What to do after you have tried everything and nothing works." Hope this helps you.
