More surgery.

Question:

I had sinus surgery back in March of this year (f.e.s.s) and recently had my follow up appointment at the ENT clinic. (I’m in the U.K so excuse the lack of information – the NHS aren’t fond of in-depth explanations) I haven’t seen the same doctor twice but this time I saw a doctor who has given me the most information to date.  She told me that during surgery some polyps were removed from the ‘middle turbinate’ and there was evidence of chronic sinusitis and that the sinus openings were cleared to help the sinuses drain properly. She examined me with an endoscope (First time anyone has bothered at such a clinic) and then asked if I had ever had an injury to my nose as it "looked bent."  When I told her it had always looked like this (!) she explained that it was bent on the inside and told me that I’ll probably  need surgery to straighten it.  (Why wasn’t this picked up before I ask myself – and should have asked her!)  She correctly assumed that I had trouble with my sense of smell too. I wasn’t given any medication following the surgery and the pressure has started to build up again. She put me back on Flixonase spray to see if it would have greater effect following the surgery.  I report back to the clinic in October but things are looking bleak already. 1. Is she talking about a ‘deviated septum’ 2. I would appreciate some input on whether I should give the surgery serious thought or avoid it altogether. I mentioned this newsgroup and what I’ve read about irrigation and all I got was "We don’t do that in this country." The only consolation I have is that although treatment is slow – it’s free. I would appreciate feedback from any U.K patients who’ve been down the NHS route. Thanks. Gill

Response:

There seems to be a lack of science here, doesn’t there…  One ENT doctor who originally told me I needed to have my deviated septum straightened during surgery. The surgery was subsequently done by another ENT doctor who told me it wasn’t deviated enough to warrant straightening. So he did the rest…     I’ve been told by my ENT doctor to irrigate every day. I’ve been told by my infectious disease doctor not to do this because it introduces bacteria into the sinuses.     My opinion is that I should do the nasal irrigation and that my deviated septum should have been fixed. The mucous is thick and has trouble getting out of there. Perhaps I’m wrong, but what the heck… Wayne
