Lexapro…any comments?

For those that don’t know me (and really, why should you?), I was here when the ASAP was really shinny and new and a moderated group was a dream we’d have each time the trolls crashed our party. I see some of the old timers are here…great seeing you all! Anyhow, I’ve been down the drugs-and-drinking-to-rehab road. I’ve been sober for 15 years. I waited until I was…about 8 years sober before seeking a pdoc for meds. At first, I refused the idea of taking meds. I was a basket case, I couldn’t leave my house, the panic and anxiety were eating me up: I lost my job, almost lost my family (over drinking) and yet, even after 8 years without a drink or a drug, I would not seek help. I am now taking Paxil CR (60 mg) and Klonopin (3 mg) daily. I am about to switch the Paxil to Lexapro due to something new: depression, that deep dark hole that I am in… <sigh. Anyways…anyone have any experience with Lexapro? Has it helped you with PA and depression? I mean, vs. Paxil–are the side effect the same? Will I ever have a sex life again? You, know, stuff like that. Thanks for any help you can pass on… — Chuck — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm
Switched from Paxil to Lexapro 6 months ago. It whipped the depression issues. PA’s are more managable. Anxiety seems to be about the same. Libido came back while weening onto Lexapro. When I hit 20mg it went away again. Lexapro’s clinical results indicates less sexual dysfunction. gt — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Try it out and see if it works for you. There are a few people here who do well on Celexa, which is the same molecule that Lexapro is based on. Many people do well on Zoloft. I did well on it for 7 years. I’m on Effexor XR right now but I can’t be 100% sure if it’s working because I’m also battling chronic sinusitis. Welcome back and good luck with your next SSRI. If you find that a sex life is "hard" to "come" by while on lexapro<G, make sure to talk to the doctor about it. It can be a very common side-effect of antidepressants and there are some ways to treat it, either with adding a med to counteract the side-effect, lowering the dose or switching to another med. If you are having this side-effect while on paxil, there is no guarantee that you will have it on lexapro as well. How has life been otherwise? I hope well

Hey Chuck, I think I remember you from about 5 years ago. I’ve been off alcohol for 25 years with the help of AA. I’m on Zoloft and desipramine for recurrant depression, and Klonopin 3 mg/day to keep my anxiety level down. I’ve never been on any other SSRI. I’ve been on Zoloft for over 10 years, and the desipramine (a TCA) was added about 6 years ago to augment the Zoloft. Zoloft affects serotonin and desipramine affects norepinephrine. The combo works well for depression in me. Plus I’ve been a regular jogger for the past one year which has helped improve my overall feeling of well being. It helps me to sleep soundly as well. Hello Chuck! Nice to see you again. Sorry to hear that depression has started to rear its ugly head. I have no experience with Lexapro, but if I recall Paxil has always been less than acceptable for you, at least in terms of the side effects. I wish you the best of luck with lexapro and hope it handles all your issues. I have been weaning off paxil for several months now, and I am in the last stretch. I have found things that the Paxil was causing that I had no idea were happening. As for the libido thing, I sometimes wonder if anything could be as bad as Paxil. I could not imagine having those issues on top of everything else. I guess I was fortunate that it only decreased my libido and did not extinguish it. Again welcome back and good luck! d

Hi, Chuck…. I am on Prozac… and the libido has disappeared. But.. in my case, I care less and less about it.. so I guess that’s a good thing. At least I’m out of the pit of depression that I was in for so long. I have heard good things about Lexapro and lack of side effects… I hope it will work for you. I’m glad you are posting again… and hope you’ll stick around! Take care…. Happy New Year! MikeH
