Cipro
Question:
I have had 4 sinus infections in the past 6 months. My doctor prescribed 4 months of Cipro, and told me to use Flonase. I checked the Cipro info sheet and the dosages for sinusitis indicate 10 days, 500 mg twice daily. I have now been taking it for 25 days. Lisa.
Response:
Many doctors have told me that sinus infections are hard to clear up with the usual 10 day course of antibiotics, and hence many times a longer course is recommended. In my own case, Cipro has been only moderately succcessful for treating sinus infections, but each of us is different. I hope it works for you. DLL

Lisa, As a 10-year veteran of repeated sinus infections, I think it’s a good bet that it’s really the SAME sinus infection, not four. What sometimes happens is that you finish the first 10-day course of antibiotics and it seems like it clears things up, but really it doesn’t. Then, after a few days, or weeks, the infection reasserts itself. Then you go on another 10 day round, and the cycle repeats itself. These infections can be hard to fight, so don’t be alarmed by the long-term course. I’m assuming, though, that in that four-month period he plans to re-examine you several times??? If not, insist that your doctor do so, or change doctors. Also, is your doctor an ENT or a GP?? You might want to see an ENT. Flonase will help relieve the swelling that is contributing to the sinus infection because the swelling is preventing good drainage. The sinus passages are very, very tiny and swelling can close them. Personally, I haven’t had good luck with Cipro. It keeps the infection at bay, but doesn’t seem to clear it. I’m on a 30-day course of Augmentin at the moment. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! My ENT told me that for people with chronic sinusitis, a 15 day course of antibiotics is MINIMIUM. 21 days is even better. > In article <37013FD1.EDBC6…@uwrf.edu>, > Lisa Clark <lisa.a.cl…@uwrf.edu> wrote: > > I have had 4 sinus infections in the past 6 months. CIPRO no longer works for me. Don’t know if it is true, but someone told me that it is NOT effective against staph bacteria. There will be some degree of genetic variability in any population of any species. In bacteria, some individuals will be more resistant to the antibiotic than others. If you discontinue the course of antibiotic as soon as your symptoms improve, OR if the antibiotic is only prescribed for 10 days and you need 15 days of it, the most resistant individuals of the bacteria may yet survive to reproduce. Then not only do the sympoms return, but the colony will be more resistant to the antibiotic (since they carry the antibiotic-resistant genes of their progenitors). In this way, the use of antibiotics breed strains of bacteria which the antibiotic can’t touch. Lisa, I don’t recall your original post, but saw Tigger’s reply. My drug of choice is 875 mg Augmentin (don’t fool with weaker tablets), and an oral steroid chaser for a week. My ENT told me that if you feel bad within 4 days w/out antibiotics, it’s the same infection ("chronic"). But if it’s longer than that, say a few weeks, it’s a new infection ("recurrent"). I, too, get frequent sinus infections – 8 or 9 a year for the last 3 years. It’s awful, and I’ve been to 5 ENT’s with no luck. If you have any breakthroughs, let me know! I’ve been using saline mist (Ayr brand) about 4 times throughout the day and 2400mg of guaifenisen (mucos thinner) a day, and that seems to help. Good luck, Scott

Now I’m just wondering if the Pau d’arco tea would work on you?? Check the archives to see our recent discussion. I’m still feeling clear from it, and would like to know if it works for everyone. Ha, I’m sure that is not possible, but still feeling charmed from my clearing experience. I hope there would not be allergies to the bark (in the catalpa tree family). "Scott G. I doubt you’ll find many allergies to the bark. It acts to normalize allergies. <grin> No, I doubt it will work for everyone, particularly if there are physical obstructions to drainage. My understanding is that once the mucous membranes become dead and inactive, all the antibiotics in the world will not cure the recurring infections. After two years on every antibiotic with no permanent cure, I opted for sinus surgery. Though I’m sure I still have some level of infection, the sinuses are draining and I feel much better. I use nasal irrigation depending how things are going. I found a great discrepancy even among ENTs as to whether or not I needed surgery. I have also learned that there is a great variation of talent among those who perform sinus surgery. Her latest ENT told my sister that the ENT who did her sinus surgery really butchered her up. Shop for doctors with the same mentality used for shopping for a used car. Take your time and investigate thoroughly.
