Advice on these symptoms please

Question:

The nose may be clogged by swelling or polyps. The Hydro Pulse is designed to work by flowing solution through the nose so if the nose is blocked, won’t work and we DON’T  WANT people using high pressure to force the fluid through. Ok ot use an inhaller – benzedrex or nose spray – neosynephrine to open the nose but probably need more if the nose is swollen shut. this can occur from overuse of nose drops/spray such as Afrin. Again, need something other than the Hydro PUlse irrigator. Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com http://www.TinnitusRelief.net http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic516.htm

I forgot to mention that I have lost maybe 90% of my sense of smell and most of my sense of taste. That’s not a minor thing!  Again, sounds like impaired cilai but do need a complete examination. I think that if you can breathe through your nose well, it is not completely blocked.  Dr. Grossan may have further comments. >>It is not at all clear that milk is a factor for most people. >OK but I figured that stopping drinking it would do no harm (I get >enough protein and minerals from other sources), and I’ve realised that >it’s a bit of a ‘marketing success’ really, in the West, a) that adult >humans drink milk of any kind (given that the reason why mammals produce >milk is to nurture infants), and b) that humans of any age drink the >milk of mammalian species other than our own :-)

I do not drink it either for much he same reasons.

Unfortunately sinusitis cannot be diagnosed om the basis of symptoms alone. A CT scan and endoscopic nasal examination by an otolaryngologist ("ENT") will tell the story. You could ceratinly try any form of irrigation. It is not at all clear that milk is a factor for most people.

Your history is often associated with impaired cilia function. First thing is to increase fluid intake. Read the FAQ’s. Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com http://www.TinnitusRelief.net http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic516.htm

Hi Don, and many thanks for this. I understand that a counter-indication for irrigation is complete nasal blockage. This will probably sound like a stupid question, but what exactly does ‘complete nasal blockage’ mean? Does it mean that even breathing through the nose is impossible? I can breathe through my nose reasonably OK (although my breathing rate goes up when I keep my mouth closed – but maybe this is normal? :-) ). But no mucus comes out when I blow, so I feel ‘blocked-up’ in the colloquial sense. Pulsatile irrigation sounds great and I would like to try it but I want to be sure that I’ll do no harm. >It is not at all clear that milk is a factor for most people.

OK but I figured that stopping drinking it would do no harm (I get enough protein and minerals from other sources), and I’ve realised that it’s a bit of a ‘marketing success’ really, in the West, a) that adult humans drink milk of any kind (given that the reason why mammals produce milk is to nurture infants), and b) that humans of any age drink the milk of mammalian species other than our own :-) David — David Jones

Hello, I would be grateful for some advice on my e/n/t symptoms/history as follows: – for several years, a dry blocked-up feeling, lasting about 1-2 months, with fatigue and mild e/n/t-related headaches, usually beginning about November. No nasal discharge, or hardly any. – ear pain when I am on flights, especially for the last 1-2 hours of the flight, i.e. presumably when descending. In the past, my ears would be blocked sometimes for 24 hours after landing. After those 24 hours I would feel ‘whoosh’, the release of pressure in my ears. More recently I have found the use of ear-plugs a great help. – over the past 2 years, the same dry blocked-up feeling as above but CONTINUOUS, i.e. all-year-round, also with chronic fatigue – I occasionally use a Kaz steam inhaler when the symptoms are especially bad, but this has given only mild relief, if that. Have tried putting various essential oils into the water, the best seems to be eucalyptus oil. But it hasn’t done much really. – over the past 2 weeks, the symptoms have worsened, and I have had the feeling that OTHER cavities have also become blocked up, closer to my ears. My ears themselves are now permanently blocked. Holding my nose and blowing, in an attempt to clear my ears, doesn’t work, and feels as though it is completely useless, i.e. it doesn’t even feel as though it ‘nearly’ works. When I do this, I get an ‘inflated’ feeling in my ears, and then a sort of ’suck back’ (restoring of original pressure, I suppose), which makes a sort of WHISTLY sound. – the above symptoms are not associated with any nasal discharge. On the contrary, when I try to blow my nose, NOTHING comes out. – I also use a neti pot from time to time. Before the worsening of my symptoms 2 weeks ago, I would get some sort of stream, or drips, coming out of the lower nostril, but these would have little if any mucus content – they would not really be classed as ‘gunk’. Now, however, I get maybe a few drips, sometimes nothing at all, but it’s hard to tell whether they are really coming out of the lower nostril, because the pot spout doesn’t make a good fit in my nostrils, so the drips could be running from the upper nostril. Use of the pot doesn’t make me feel any better either. I’m reading about pulsatile irrigation, but not sure whether I am too blocked up for this to be worth trying. And I have recently stopped taking milk in beverages. I’ve read a bit about sinusitis, and reckon that sinusitis comes into it somewhere along the line. Would be grateful for any advice.
