My appt w/ENT postponed…

Question:

Hello, folks. I have been suffering w/sinus infection since Oct ‘97.  *Finally* I got a referral to an ENT.  Called for appt w/ENT and could not get one for 7 weeks. Unbelievable, isn’t it? I feel like I have been walking a tightrope over pain.  Problem is – I keep falling off the rope.  I can’t believe I’m not going to need something for anxiety soon. I take my Doxycycline at *exactly* 8:00 twice daily.  This keeps the infection from taking over my entire skull and driving me into migraines.  *But* if I am even four hours late with one of my Doxycycline, I pay in pain (knives and flashing lights behind my eyes, the usual sinus pressures, etc.) for two and a half days before the Doxy gets a handle on it again. My internists prescribed *exactly* enough Doxy to get me to my ENT appt.  I am serious about the ‘exactly enough’ – my last capsule is the morning of my May 1st appt. Until today …        The ENT’s wife was the victim of a horrible automobile accident today. She’ll be in hospital for a while.  (My prayers are with her.)        The physician’s scheduling person phoned me today to reschedule.  The doctor cannot see me for yet another week (naturally, under the circumstances); making it May 8th now. I cried.  I tell you, my eyes simply cried all by themselves.  I wasn’t emotionally connected to it, but my poor old body simply cried all by itself. Good lord. So, if I hadn’t needed something for anxiety before, I could sure use it now. Quite frankly, I am freaking out.  The lurking pain and pain potential has me entirely in its grip, emotionally, physically, whatever. Naturally, I have asked the scheduling person if the doctor might phone me in another week of Doxycyline.  Of course, she couldn’t be sure and will contact me tomorrow. Please think some positive energy my way.   Joyce (aka George)

Response:

Joyce, I agree with Mikee, try irrigating if you haven’t already tried it. Hang in there, its only one more week. You might want to call the ENT and see if he wants you to get a cat scan. You could get that done in the mean time, to save time. Good luck, Anthony

Response:

Hi, Anthony and Mikee … and *everyone* who replied.  :-) No.  I haven’t tried irrigation.  I am resistant to it … it sounds pretty yucky.  <embarrassed>  I suppose I can work up to it, but … *ew*  Don’t you just gag to death? <embarrassed, again> Good news on the Doxy-front.  ENT’s scheduling person phoned today.  The prescription has been placed with my pharmacy for me.  **whew** Anthony:  What a g-r-e-a-t  idea about the CT Scan ahead of time.  I  l-o-v-e that idea.  *Thanks*  I’ll phone ENT’s ofc tomorrow. Irrigating…are you  s-u-r-e  ???? Healthy-day wishes for all,                                     Joyce [aka George0554]

Response:

Irrigating, YES!  I was ready to have a second sinus surgery in August, but have not needed it since I began irrigating.  I found out about the proper way of irrigating( the Grossan irrigator tip with a Water Pik) from this NG and would not let a day go by without irrigating.  Stop thinking "gross" and start thinking "heathy".  To learn more go to: WWW. ent-consult.com and www.sinuses.com  I used to use the ear syringe for irrigating which I found difficult, messy, and not as effective as the Grossan method.  I’d start it now, before your ENT visit, and see if you can get any relief.  Also be aware that not all ENTs are familiar with difficult chronic and acute sinusitis and the benefits of irrigating.  Good luck and I hope your ENT is a good one.  Keep us posted.

————–  Thank you so much for your thoughtful and enthusiastic response, Sarlis.  O-o-o-o-K.  I’ll check out the sites (thanks for the leads) and learn about irrigation….<yuck>  And, I will update the group on how it goes.   ————– **Thanks for caring** Joyce <wondering how on Earth she’ll *e*v*e*r* deal with the irrigation-thing>  ;-)

OK….don’t mean to sound snotty (no pun intended <g>)  here, but compared to all the pain that you go through, it seems ridiculous that you wouldn’t try the nasal irrigation.  I sure hope that everyone talked you into it now, that’s the one thing I look forward to every morning!!! After months and months of antibiotics and still no significant improvement I realized that the more natural ways you can find to help your situation the better. You’ll get over the yuck part. Make sure you irrigate enough, don’t ever try water without the salt and baking soda (ouch) and keep it up.  I do it in the shower with a bulb syringe (the kind you use to suck out the baby’s nose) and it works great
